Thai Student Activists Demand Thaksin's Arrest: Present 6 Proposals

Monday (March 18, 2024), a coalition of student activists, along with the Political Reform Committee (PRC) and the Democratic Army, stormed the Department of Corrections, demanding the arrest of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. They presented six proposals, warning of consequences if not adhered to, invoking Article 157.

 

The procession, originating from the Chamaimaruch Bridge in Bangkok, featured a sound truck accompanied by over 50 vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, reported INN.

 

Upon reaching the Department of Corrections, the group vocally criticized the institution's alleged favoritism towards Thaksin, allowing him temporary refuge within their premises. Protest signs proclaimed slogans such as "Justice for All, Even the Powerful."

 

The group's objectives encompass several key points:

 

Despite legal processes, Thaksin never faced punishment, suggesting preferential treatment.

Thaksin's stay at the police hospital is viewed as evasive rather than incarceration.

His claimed 180-day medical leave from jail lacks credibility.

Medical reports supporting Thaksin's illness are dismissed as fabricated.

Media reports contradicting Thaksin's illness are cited as evidence against him.

Failure to incarcerate Thaksin lawfully will be deemed a violation of Article 157.

The activists demand proper legal action, challenging the authority's integrity in handling Thaksin's case.

good move, however as he is the hidden PM there will be nothing done, except maybe for the students that the are trying to undermine the national security..

👍 Kudos. That’s the way to do it. Hopefully it will wake up the rest of the country to do something about this farce. 10M pee’d off Thais on the streets might make a difference.

Maybe it's  because when the military rape the country they grant themselves immunity from all future prosecution.

Except that, there is absolutely no evidence that 10million Thais are pee'd off about Thaksin! Most of the student community that I know, whilst aware and cynical about the Thai "elite" shenanigans have their own political leaders and couldn't give two hoots about Thaksin. Their Mum's and Dad's, many of whom supported the Shinewatras and their political movement are quite pleased that the old man is back home.

 

On the photographic evidence posted here recently, there were not very many of them, and the "students" were remarkably long in the tooth.

 

50 vehicles including cars and motorcycles adds up to a crowd of about 200.

In the democratic parts of the world, when one sees a headline about 'Student Activists', one can pretty safely assume they're of The Left (mild or extreme).

 

But here in Thailand things are not so clear ... Being 'anti-corruption' could cover any part of the political spectrum depending on how the money's flowing, who's paying, which particular clan you were born into, how old you are and which side of bed you got out of this morning.

The military doesn't need to act against Thaksin, he has surrendered all principles and jumped in bed with the army. As soon as they overturned the democratically elected PM, installed Sretta as their do nothing puppet, and the PT joined forces with the army. 

 

The lies continue, the steal continues, the rapacious greed continues, and it appears that the Army is desperate to hold on to power as long as it possibly can. 

 

The activists are on the right track, what we need are 20 million Thais out in the streets demonstrating, then things might change.

Thaksin was only able to get temporary "refuge" due in large part to a Royal Pardon. Do the students contest the Royal Pardon, potentially committing LM?

Furthermore, if the Pardon then allowed Thaksin eligible for parole and release, do the students contest the laws that allows such a parole and release?

Seems the students themselves are creating multiple levels of conflicting laws that actually results in bias contradicting Thaksin's Pardon and Parole.

It's a disgrace to the Thai military. We all remember how strictly they were after Thaksin ... but finally, while still in office, made a shady deal with him and his party for his return. The spinelessness of so many people in military and police uniforms here is disgusting.

Everyone I know in Issan who used to support Thaksin, is no longer behind him, they feel completely betrayed by his sell out to the Army, and they feel like his principles no longer apply. I'm not sure where you're getting your information from but his support base is quite low.

If 10 million Thais didn't stand up and protest at every military coup, where will they find 10 million because a bunch of students are unhappy.

 

I can understand the students protesting about other students who were jailed by the previous government, but threatening "action" if Thaksin is not put in jail seems a waste to me.
