Pickpockets theft of Norwegian-Thai couple was karma, say cops

A Thai police officer dismissed a complaint from a Norwegian man and his Thai girlfriend who lost 30,000 baht in cash and a mobile phone to four pickpockets outside a shopping mall in Bangkok. The Thai cop allegedly told the foreigner it was his fault, a result of bad karma in their past lives.

The Thai woman and her Norwegian boyfriend sought assistance from the non-profit organisation Saimai Survive after officers from Lumpini Police Station and the Immigration Bureau did not take their case seriously.

Speaking to the organisation and reporters on March 26, the woman explained that she and her foreign boyfriend had planned their wedding ceremony in Thailand for April 12. So, they visited CentralWorld shopping mall on March 24 to try on wedding dresses and buy rings.

Afterwards, they waited for a public bus at a stop in front of Big C supermarket, across from CentralWorld. The woman realised that her iPhone 14 Pro Max and a wallet, containing two credit cards and 30,000 baht in cash had been stolen when they were on the bus could not pay the fares.

They suspected that pickpockets took advantage when a crowd scrambled to get on the bus to steal their belongings. They decided to rush to Lumpini Police Station to seek help from police.

Karma from 100 years ago

To their surprise, officers asked them to obtain security camera footage from Big C themselves, citing they were on a mission to arrest drug dealers.

They then turned to the Immigration Bureau, where an officer suggested that they let it go. This officer told the couple that as this theft might be the result of their karma in their past lives, 100 years ago. The officer added that they were fortunate not to lose their lives.

The couple had no choice but to return to Big C to get the CCTV footage. The woman said the CCTV camera captured the pickpocketing incident very clearly.

One man blocked the Norwegian, while two female pickpockets blocked the woman, allowing a transwoman to grab the belongings from their bag.

The victims believed that the transwoman had been following them since they were at CentralWorld, as they were familiar with her face.

During the interview, the Norwegian man expressed his disappointment, stating his love for Thailand and his decision to host his wedding in the country. He admitted to being caught off guard by the incident.

His partner added that her boyfriend had been visibly stressed following the theft. While they didn’t anticipate recovering all their belongings, they hoped that the authorities would apprehend the pickpockets to deter future crimes.

The Saimai Survive founder, Ekkaphop Lueangprasert, promised to assist the couple and coordinate with the superintendent of Lumpini Police Station.

This is one of the reasons why I am leaving this god forsaken place.

I have just checked the date and it is not April 1st yet.

This country is an absolute joke!

Anyone with even an ounce of self respect would struggle to take this place seriously.

I thought you’d decided to ‘integrate’, join a hi-so gym, become more Thai, stop drinking etc ????

Anyway, this is a perfect example of a the lazy Policing we see here…

The BiB all need a ‘push’ to do their job & now social media will do that.

Hopefully now the BiB have been nudged into doing their job.

this is far more than just lazy policing. it is a state of mind. the police were lazy yes but it also gives insight into how some of these people operate. they flat out lied to be lazy that is the greater issue i see. some will come attack me saying i have no proof etc. Occam's razor comes to mind though.  them being lazy is a foregone conclusion.

also a grown adult government official telling someone who apparently is a victim of a crime that they obviously deserved it. wowzers.

the danger from that mentality is much greater than the incident in question if you ask me. getting into detail of this will only result in me being called a thai basher. so i will refrain.

then you have the foreigner part of it in regards to how police feel and act towards reported incidents. nothing lazy about that but again getting into details will only result in name calling.

Nothing to do with this article, eh? "One man blocked the Norwegian, while two female pickpockets blocked the woman, allowing a transwoman to grab the belongings from their bag." Or maybe that was a PSA?

Indeed! In crowded places one has to be careful. But sometimes, we all may make a slip... just human. The feeling you get once you are robbed is terrible - no matter what the value involved. Just to feel that your privacy had been invaded...

I agree. Most Thais have a shoulder bag. Keep it out front. Or a daypack out front.

Video shows a ladyboy standing behind a man and stealing from that position.

It never ceases to amaze me the arrogant stupidity of the people here.

Correct. To understand, we have to go back to the original role of the Thai Police, which was a bunch of hired thugs to protect the Chinese merchant class.

Total reform needed.

Another bloke in a frock stealing.

Very sad, and unlucky and possibly naive.

But these cops need dragging into the street and beating with a stick if they really said that.

What absolutely disgraceful behaviour.

One could be forgiven for hoping that in 100 years time the cop who said such a thing finds himself riding a (futuristic) motorcycle late at night in front of a (futuristic Red Bull Ferrari)..... karma's a bitch!

  • Popular Post

Well you don't expect the police to do any actual policing when nothings on offer do you  🤔

  • Popular Post

So even cops are daft enough to believe in this karma myth😁 Don't see a lot of karma for what they get up to, oh that will be in another life of course where they get re born as a soi dog or something!

They were clearly smart people, they avoided taxi scammers who might overcharge them by 100B. Smart!

I always thought that sort of "information" should be reserved for the medium of a  facebook page, Isn't that where people traditionally post uninteresting cr@p   Anybody else thinking of leaving needs to realise that the rest of us are not in the slightest bit interested,

Pratunam is pretty dangerous area. This unfortunate couple should learn it somehow. It is like going for a walk at night in Bangkok slums and get robbed. Not a karma but utter carelessness.

Car accidents arent the same as pick pocketing.

Ok, karma.  Or maybe "It was God's will."  You can get a lot of mileage out of that one.

Or as the US Protestants like to say "thoughts and prayers."

Nasty bigotry, akin to saying that all farang smell bad, are whoremongers, are ignorant and have no manners.

You can see pretty clear from the video the mistake was they should’ve offered the Police guy like 50 or 60% to get their belongings back. These guys ain’t gonna do nothing if they don’t get paid TIT.

I think Hamish Day and his brother now have their defense strategy.
