A female para-military ranger was shot dead as she was selling food at a fresh market in Chanae district of Thailand’s southernmost province of Narathiwat on Thursday evening.

District police said that a lone gunman appears to have stalked the ranger, 30-year-old Nurisan Phromsri, as she was earning additional income while off-duty at the Dusongyor market.

The gunman pulled a 9mm handgun from his belt and fired one shot into the ranger’s head before escaping, killing her instantly. The gunshot panicked shoppers and vendors, who fled in all directions.

RIP Nurisan Phromsri.  It is reported that her younger brother was recently shot dead, allegedly by insurgents, but perhaps this second shooting could be suggestive of a more personal motive in both killings?

RIP Nurisan Phromsri.

She was most likely an unfortunate victim of the South Thailand insurgency and not a random act of violence.....

And the 'flavour of the month' PM is encouraging tourism in the south of Thailand.

What could possible go wrong?

Many years ago, I did a border bounce to Malaysia.

Herbert (who organised them) said to us all -

"after we pass the next police checkpoint, we will not stop for anything until we reach the border.

If you need a pee, please do it in the footwell by the door."

She was a para-military ranger aka mercenary paid by the Thai military Internal Security Operstions Command (ISOC) to hunt Malay Muslim freedom fighters in the South.

It's my impression that  ISOC uses these mercenaries to do field patrols to hunt and kill Malay Muslim rebels to minimize exposure of regular Thai military outside of their secure posts. ISOC for decades has maintained the military's State of Emergency in the Southern provinces that deprives resident Malay Muslims constitutional rights. Nowhere outside of the South is there a SOE.

Yes, her execution was unfortunate but not surprising.

They are NOT mercenaries, but volunteers who are part time rangers. She was NOT executed but MURDERED whilst off duty, by a cowardly terrorist, masquerading as a civilian and a human being, who was so bold and brave that he ran away

The "mercenaries" as you call them used would not be listed or named as para-military they go unidentified. Yes there are "mercenaries" on both sides doing bad crap to innocent and not so innocent people. There are also jealous boyfrends or relatives on drugs.

The article identifies her as "A female para-military" so not unidentified. ISOC knows who she is as she would be on the RTA payroll. The Malay Muslim soldiers are no more mercenaries than are the Ukraine nation's military soldiers fighting Russian "occupiers. "

Your implication is incorrect. "Mercenaries" as you are using tve term and implying are separate and not part of the para military.
