A homeless man was apprehended by police for savagely attacking a sub-district chief on Cha-am Beach, Phetchaburi province. The victim is presently in a critical condition in a nearby hospital.

The incident was brought to light by Wissuta Wannathippakorn, the victim's daughter who was concerned that the perpetrator might not be caught, given that the CCTV cameras at the crime scene were non-functional. She described how she and her father, along with some other officials, had gone to a hotel at the beach for a seminar.

She further explained that her father, Sommart Wannathippakorn, had decided to enjoy the beach atmosphere at around 10 am, sat on a beach chair to photograph the sea, and subsequently dozed off, only to wake up severely injured without any memory of the attack.

The assault resulted in critical injuries to Sommart, including a fractured facial bone, broken nose, a brain hemorrhage, and other complications. The attacker also stole her father’s mobile phone and some cash.

Thai online users initially suspected the chair vendor due to prior similar occurrences. However, tracking the stolen phone's signal led the police to a local phone shop. The shop owner revealed that they had bought the stolen phone from a homeless man. Further investigations and security camera footage identified the attacker as 35-year-old Chaowarit Thanawaratorn.

Chaowarit confessed to attacking Sommart with a discarded iron rod when he woke up while his belongings were being searched. He was arrested near the scene of the crime on Jao Lai Road.

I hope they lose the money that they paid for the phone. They almost certainly would have (and definitely should have) known it was stolen.

The beach vendors there are almost as aggressive as the attacker, not a pleasant beach to visit.

They act like they own the beach.

That didn't work well for John Wayne Bobbitt.

Good boy! Bring up psycho people. Once in a while you might get it right.

Must have been concussed/brain damaged not to remember getting beaten up with an iron bar!

I would think the first strike would wake you up rather quickly unless it's like a king hit.  Then you sleep for longer.

Either way it's all a bloody nasty piece of work.  I expect the homeless guy has just found a new longtime home.

Concussion can cause loss of recent memory and the details of the event leading up to it...   i.e. the Hippocampus is impacted preventing transfer of short term to long term storage and consolidation of memory.

Kind of like being blind drunk and blacking out.... the alcohol blocks the same process as a concussion....

....

And.. Agree...  the 'homeless guy needs to go away for a long time... this wasn't assault it was attempted murder...

... Sommart (injured party) was asleep on the beach and the homeless man was looking through his belongings, assumedly with the intention of robbing him....   Sommart woke up...     and the homeless guy 'just happend to have an Iron rod at hand'....   ('cos they're all over the beach eh...)....
