Blinken Warns of Chinese Election Interference Amid Tense Relations

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has sounded the alarm on China's attempts to influence the upcoming U.S. elections, revealing evidence of interference efforts during his recent visit to China. In an interview with CNN, Blinken emphasized the Biden administration's stance that any such interference is "totally unacceptable."

 

During his meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other officials, Blinken raised concerns about the interference, underscoring that it would constitute a violation of commitments made by Xi during his November meeting with President Biden in Woodside, Calif. The goal of that meeting was to address deep-seated mistrust and competition between the U.S. and China.

 

While Blinken did not cite specific evidence of Chinese election interference, reports have emerged, including from The New York Times, indicating covert Chinese accounts posing as supporters of former President Trump. These accounts allegedly promote conspiracy theories, sow domestic divisions, and target President Biden ahead of the November election.

 

Expressing firm opposition to any Chinese interference, Blinken reiterated the message during his discussions with Xi and other officials. Despite the tense atmosphere, Blinken's trip aimed to maintain open lines of communication and explore avenues for cooperation between the two nations.

 

Throughout his visit, Blinken met with key figures in China, including Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong. He emphasized the importance of military-to-military communication to prevent conflicts, highlighted the need for counternarcotics cooperation, and advocated for stronger people-to-people ties.

 

However, Blinken's trip concluded without any new announcements on cooperation, underscoring the profound tensions between the two countries. Despite the challenges, Blinken remains committed to stabilizing the relationship and strengthening communication channels at the highest levels.

 

As the U.S. and China navigate their complex relationship, Blinken's warnings serve as a reminder of the ongoing geopolitical tensions and the need for vigilance against foreign interference in American elections.

As far as US congress, I'm not aware of even one dual American Israeli citizen.
