Trump Fined for Contempt of Court, Faces Jail Time for Further Violations

In a significant legal development, Judge Merchan has ruled that former President Donald Trump violated his gag order and is found in contempt of court. Trump has been fined $1,000 for each of the nine breaches, totaling $9,000. However, the consequences for Trump could extend beyond financial penalties, as Judge Merchan has issued a serious warning that further violations could result in incarceration.

 

During the court proceedings, Judge Merchan made it clear that continued willful violations of the gag order would not be tolerated. Trump has been explicitly warned that if he continues to flout the court's prohibitions on attacking witnesses, potential witnesses, jurors, and court staff, he could face time behind bars.

 

Prosecutors have been granted their requested relief, with Trump ordered to remove seven offending posts from his Truth Social platform and two from his campaign website. This ruling underscores the court's commitment to enforcing compliance with its directives and maintaining order in the legal process.

From a different perspective... instead of the hate... where is the compassion... trump may be a lot of things but is he not human as well?  "We have a gag order, which to me is totally unconstitutional. I'm not allowed to talk, but people are allowed to talk about me. So, they can talk about me," Trump said outside the New York City courtroom last week. "They can say whatever they want, they can lie, but I'm not allowed to say anything. The gag order is in place because of Trump's record, and actions, of saying and posting things which amount to threats against court officials (and their families) and inevitably the jurors.

 

No doubt if others were making such threats then they to would be subject to orders.

 

What is remarkable is that despite breaching the order 9 times, multiple acts of contempt of court, he has been let off with a fine, remarkable compassion!

The question which is central to current events is whether Trump is likely to be standing against Biden come November 5, or not ?

The maximum fine under the law is $1000 per infraction of the gag order.

 

The only other option is jail of up to 30 days per infraction.

 

If the Judge had gone for the jail option Defendant Trump would appeal and almost certainly win.

 

The judge has wisely and fairly issued fines first + a warning that any further infringement will be rewarded with jail time.

 

There is another hearing due to address other infractions by the Defendant Trump, but these occurred before the Judge issued his warning of jail. These too will be rewarded with fines.

There is however a far more serious risk to Defendant Trump.

 

The Defendant is out on pre-trial release, in several jurisdictions and under Federal cases.

 

Defiance of any court gag order might very well be an infringement of the conditions under which he is on pretrial release.

Defendant Trump had said it would be a privilege to be put in prison, it looks like the prison door is wide open for him to stroll right in at his leisure.

Exactly. I wonder if Joe Public would enjoy the leniency of breaking court rules so many times and only receive a slap on the wrist and a fine that is worth less than peanuts to the offender.

 

Please please PLEASE make Trump take to the stand. There surely is no person in America better able to condemn himself through his ignorant and big-mouth rantings. I can imagine him threatening the judge as he struggles with understanding that he is not the one in charge of proceedings.

Four word slogans don't amount to anything, and except for the biggest losers in life, "owning the libs" is no reason to like him. Some of us take exception to a guy who CLEARLY (except to his cult sycophants) tried to overthrow 250 years of American Democracy. There is absolutely no other explanation for his calling his goobers to DC for 6 Jan 21, nor holding the Mall rally and telling them to 'march to the Capitol' and 'fight like hell'. Those are undeniable facts: he did those things. If anyone tried to argue "How could trump have known it would turn violent?", then that is an admission that trump is an idiot. Of course he know; it was his intent (to be argued in court).

 

Still to be determined---if it ever makes it to court and gets through trump's delay tactics---is why he was (allegedly) intimately involved in the Fake Elector Scheme, and why he stole highly classified documents and then lied about returning them. Also, why did he try to play John Gotti and pressure the GA SecState to "just find me...11,780 votes"?

 

Oh, and why did the first 44 Presidents do just fine, and were never hampered by any lack of immunity, but suddenly trump tries to argue Presidents would have their hands tied unless they could kill political opponents and critics?

 

To his goobers, they can excuse all of that for reasons having to do with their own brain addled belief system and the need to live vicariously through trump, but rational people and real patriots cannot accept the damage he has done to the USA.

I think the judge has been rather clever, Trump was calculating a few days in jail to increase his status as a martyr as he isn't getting any public support from his maga crazies, a fine and a warning will put paid to that calculation if he is later eventually jailed.
