A fatal motorbike accident occurred in Phuket earlier today, raising concerns about road safety in the region. The incident happened when a Honda Wave motorbike crashed into a concrete table at the roadside, resulting in the death of a 45-year-old passenger, Wanna Songsri.

The bike was driven by 44-year-old Nikorn Srirod who hails from Trang and reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. She was injured and rushed to Thalang Hospital.

The accident happened in front of Mueang Mai City Pillar Shrine on Thepkrasattri Road at around 3.30 am. Authorities were alerted by Thalang police. This incident adds to the alarming statistics from the ThaiRSC, the national road safety agency which reported 60 fatalities and over 9,240 injuries in Phuket since the start of the year.

Meanwhile, Phuket is also dealing with an escalating drug problem. The Phuket Provincial Narcotics Prevention and Suppression Centre committee reports a 6.21% increase in drug issues between October last year and March this year.

The narcotics issue resulted in 1,335 arrests in 78 drug-related cases. In fact, there was a dramatic 50.89% increase in drug-related arrests from February to March, with most cases involving amphetamines and crystal methamphetamine known as ya ice.

Another one, doctors or scientists should have a look at this phenomena in Thailand.

i find it strange that someone can fall asleep while on a bike. keeping your hand on the throttle requires some effort.

Thai people can sleep everywhere under any circumstances.

Yep during my military days,  when in the field on training exercises we learnt quickly to get sleep when available.

You never knew when you'd pull a 24hr plus shift.

But falling asleep when in charge of a motorbike... That's a new one.

A table at the "side" of a road? That was not causing the accident, but stupidity of the driver. If you're drunk or tired... don't drive.🙏

15 dead per month, that's been the average for many years now.

So can sailors. You sleep when and where you can. A 20 minute nap is like rain on wilted lettuce.
