My research of last year was that even more than in most places, you really have to be on the ground, asking around in Koh-P.

 

I pay 14K to be next to Nimman1 mall in Chiang Mai. It's pretty small, which suits me fine, but I can't beat the location for eating out, meetups, etc.

Jungle view or sea view? We had partly sea view at Reggea Garden. Good  place for the two months we stayed there and quiet except when they had beach parties once and awhile, but never lasted longer than 23:00 or 11pm. 

 

Cant remember other places we looked at for the moment, but we drove around and found a few places that looked ok.

Any view is fine. Prefer gym and pool or at least a quiet pool.

Then you talking differnt prices at Koh Phangan, and there is quite a few good gyms there for decent prices. resort gyms useally useless. Better go there and find what you like booking a few nights one place.

 

I prefer Wannara hotel when I want budget hotel for a few nights. But the pool is not suitable to swim. We have rented appartment at some of the beach hotels condomeniums when we stayed a week or two, as well surf and sand in Kao Takiap we have used frequently. 

 

Your suggestions in Hua Hin is noisy and to be honest not liveable for months. It is a great mix of different people who are on holiday and short term stays

Two of those hotels had quiet pools and one had both a quiet pool and gym. I used the gym 3 days in a row and only saw 1 other person in it. I could live there for months. You will never find a perfect condo or hotel.

Condo 88 was not bad, not perfect, but nice view, quiet, 

 

Anyway things might have changed. If  was living in Hua Hin, I would invested in an appartment at the beach. Marrakesh is one of them I considered. 7 mill for a two bed back then when I was searching

The Room Hua Hin Residence looks good. Has a rooftop pool and looks like a good gym. Nearby is King of Muay Thai which is an amazing gym.

It is a nice city however I can see what you are saying. Nowhere seems ideal. Hua Hin lacks great international food. Chiang Mai polluted for 3 months. Bangkok too busy. Pattaya beaches not up to scratch and busy. Phuket too many Russians, too developed. Maybe moving is the best option.

A lot of it for me may be not owning a place or the land, not necessarily problems with the city location.

 

I could buy a condo in Thailand but don't want to retire forever in a condo. That's one of my primary reasons I'm considering a home country relocation eventually. There are other countries where expats can buy, but it seems complicated at best unless I had a second passport.

 

My neighbor recently purchased a condo near me. He seemed excited about it, but I was like "ho, hum". Not someplace I would really want to be tied to or wake up in 10 years later.

We have different preferences 

 

And I have been training at King of muay thai but changed to Elite fight club.

 

God sake after 2. Session they offered me a fight.

 

If I didnt know better, I might had become the punching  clown for the next event!

Condos sometimes lose value as well if not in a prime location. Renting is better. Usually most people aren't 100% sure of their retirement plans so you aren't alone. Health and deaths of friends can totally change your requirements. I would stop worrying about it. Just enjoy each month as it comes.

@thaibreaker I loved Koh Phangan, and I could easily live there. Good restaurants, beaches and not to expensive.

Totally agree. Might be my next destination for a longer stay. Been a few years since I lived there.

Geez ..no don't buy a condo and be stuck in ONE place !

I could never imagine buying at that View Talay 2B where I was imprisoned for 6 weeks,let out by white shirted uniform security guards to the swimming pool with a expensive cafe and mini mart  every morning and then locked up in the afternoon to hear doors slamming ,shouting by thais and security guards ,motorbikes roaring ....please I escaped!!!

Retirement is NOT meant to be like that 

As I sat near the pool to watch OLD Fools less than my age on ZIMMER frames toddling along "doin the dance"🕺 unfortunately I had to 😋kick in the glass door at the end of the hallway to the swimming pool because it was locked 

 

Life in Issarn can be interesting . There are lots of places to visit and sights to see , but ...you really need a Thai GF / wife with a car because many of the most interesting spots are off the beaten track and not well publicised . Without this you are stuck in the major towns and reliant on buses which really limits things .

One thing I like about Issarn towns - they feel like real places , not like Patts which feels like a stage set populated by hoards of tourists .

I doubt I could retire to a "country" area 

I went out 6 hours from Sydney once in a car yo see dead kangaroos lying in the side of the road and scary trees swaying in the dark with no lights ,never again and same with Isaan

I'm a city boy and for now on will stick with Cities ,Bangkok Manila etc 

It's too scary ,I'm not trying to be weird (even though a work colleague woman called me this behind my back) but I actually saw "monsters"in the night  hiding behind the dark swaying trees in the Country area and 🦘 kangaroos jumping

I had some mentally ill lady in 2b who would try to open my door almost every night, turning the knob for several minutes. I heard the neighbors through the door talking to her one time, "is that your room, etc". I did not want to open the door and was afraid she had an issue with the owner (maybe why he rented the place on airbnb on an onging basis 🤷🏻‍♂️).

 

Each room had a wall holder next to the door for notices and such and I left some artificial flowers in the tray one day. She seemed to stop trying the door after that, or at least not as much as before. She may have been worried about something bad in the room or something similar 🤷🏻‍♂️, or just curious.

Depends what you call interesting. No beaches, no mountains, 50km to the nearest point of interest.

That complex actually looks pretty nice on google maps. If you're into having a yarn or enjoy ghetto tourism you need to check out places like pattaya pad, flybird, etc. It gets much more depressing then 2b or nirun type buildings.

 

That's where you get some down and out's with dirty tank tops, smelly, etc. Just being in a bar at all is not that bad. Down the stream you get guys that need to buy at 7-11 and drink outside the building or at the condo enterance type of scene. Occasionally they can be seen in the big c food court but usually eat at cheap hole in the wall thai places right near the condo and don't seem to stray far from their rooms for the most part. I checked out pattaya pad at one point and just left after a walk around. That's were you get real broke poor foreigners, probably on the way to cambodia depending on the visa situation.

 

You stop complaining about "geezers by the pool" when you see places with no hope of a pool at all. 🤣

Without a doubt those mini mart employees will take your concerns seriously and quit serving alcohol to those bad men.  I’m sure they nodded their heads in agreement.

 

The more I read your posts the more I agree with you that you should not return.

 

Pattaya already has enough nutters.

Arcadia Continental is newer but a dump IMO.

 

Big pool and a decent gym were the only plus when I checked it out as a possible lease.

 

Small rooms , 26 sqm, Access to your room from under ground parking a hassle with groceries. No direct entry.

 

Worst of all it reminded me of Grand Central Station or Swampy Airport in BKK.

Short term travelers constantly coming and going.  A Zoo.

 

And as with most Pattaya condos, shoddy construction.

They are socialising and drinking while you are typing away on Asean Now forum in a dimly lit room.... TBH I'm not sure your life is too much better.

Pre paying for 7 weeks was a big mistake, so many places you could have visited in Thailand. Hop a bus to Bangkok. Train to wherever. Did you read all about Pattaya before you came? What were you expecting to do? Pay the first week and wing it from there would have been my advice. However, If you are not into the party and girl scene why pick Pattaya in the first place. I'm not going to rag on Pattaya, I had many great holidays there years ago, but it would not be the first place I would think of visiting in Thailand for intelectual conversations and uplifting and interesting cultural experiences.
