one of the 24 hours sports bars in Pattaya used to pay 5k off season, and 15k high season. Another one who follow the opening rules, and have paper work in order, pays nothing. Two well managed bars and known for their quality live broadcasting of boxing and, rugby and soccer.

There's a bar in Bangkok that does this. Owner is great. Not too opinionated but has had same staff since before pandemic. A proper bar, service girlies fun but not for hire (although might be pursuaded 🙂 if they think they might win the golden ticket). Almost always a full house. Proper British boozer (I carefully used British as it is multi national but all are welcome). It is currently up for sale and has been for a while. 9 miillion Thai Baht or likely lower offer. It has been very successeful under current owner. Any potential buyers would have to ask themselves; would they want to be stuck there 6 days per week and do they have the enthusiasm to interact with, and retain, clients?  I know I couldn't commit but do enjoy visiting as a customer.

I recall a few ...must be like 100 years ago ....I think it was called FArang Connection somewhere that WAS very successful I think the old owner passed away and it stopped?

I went into a cafe today. Some Thai guy who spoke decent English was running it. He started talking about the economy etc. Finally led to a discussion about finances and how he was looking for a business partner. Was looking to move the shop, few customers etc since covid.

 

He was basically looking for someone to contribute money to an endeavor that was not profitable as it stood. Kind of sad. If something is not working out either downsize until a profit is realized or move on. It's just a waste of money to keep throwing money at something that's not making money.

 

I also realized (after I left) that he was just dropping his problem on me (psychologically) by telling me all of it. It was not my problem. I hope he got some relief. Whomever is reading this I pass this BS onto you. Good luck 😆.

I'm pretty sure the cafe guy was gay. He was pretty effimate. Was trying some mix between business partner and sex/relationship thing, probably. Never got that far.

 

That's one good thing about the language barrier. I don't hear that BS much simply because they can't explain it in english and don't bother. If they do, it's just a dumb simple request and not a long drawn out attempt.

IMHO.

I think it takes a certain type of person to run one of these small bars and make it a success.

They need to be the social type, who enjoys people, makes friends easily, has a laugh, and enjoys a drink themselves.

Many years ago, I bought into a piece of a NanaPlaza bar.  When going over the financials with the owner, I noted there was no notation about local "Public Relations":, ie, greasing police and other's palms.  I was honestly shocked when he told me in his three years of operating the bar, he had never once been asked for any kind of bribe.  The local cop who patrolled Nana Plaza at the time would stop by from time to time and perhaps sip a complimentary drink or two, but that was it. 

Same with two person's I knew who had Pattaya bars, one near soi Buakhao and one in Jomtien. Both told me they had never been asked for any kind of bribe.  Again, maybe a few free drinks when officials stopped by, but never a brown envelope.

Such a guy was Martyn RIP great guy who ran the Robin Hood in Jomtien. His wife struggled on but eventually gave the bar up.

It appears that the most successful beer bars around Jomtien are targeted at a specific nationality and serve as a local base for visitors from that country.
