swissie Posted June 20, 2024 Posted June 20, 2024 My first blood pressure medication made me dizzy. So I switched to: AMLODIPIN-VALSARTAN 5mg/80mg. Works fine concerning blood pressure. BUT: After a good nights sleep I wake up tired and weak. This condition prevails during the whole day. Is this medication the "culprit"? If yes, what other medication should I try?

The constant state of "weakness" concerns me most. To operate a vaccum cleaner for 10 minutes causes "exhaustion". Routine blood tests show no negative results in any way and my Doctor claims: "For your age you are in good shape, see you next year". 1

ukrules Posted June 20, 2024 Posted June 20, 2024 Ask your Doctor if Lisinopril would be suitable for you (I hear good things) - also maybe consult with a different Doctor as potential side effects should not be ignored, even if they may eventually 'go away' as you become accustomed to taking the drug.

A specialists on bloopressure medication, or also anti age dr checking your blood panel for other causes. 1

What specialist should I consult for "chronic unexplainable weakness"? Get a full health checkup with a GP including all the standard labs. If that doesn't show anything, consider finding a functional medicine practitioner. They are doctors whose approach is a little different, and ask the all-important question of "Why is someone ill i.e. what is causing their symptoms?" They don't just treat patients using standard protocols as most doctors in the west do, but look for the root cause. So they may do a deeper dive than your typical GP, testing for vitamin and nutrient deficiencies, testing your gut microbiome and things like that. 1 1 1

Maybe just ask to try a different BP medicine as there are lots of choices. re: cholesterol....several years ago i took bestatin a thai cholesterol drug...i think it was 20 mg....after month or two started to get some really bad twitching of my calf muscles...didn't hurt but more of a tickle and i could sit and look at the calf muscles twitching...i was then a five mile a day walker and thought maybe that was the problem...ultimately found that one of the side effects was muscle twitches...switched to different med, cholesterol fine and twitch stopped almost completely....taught me that there are side effects and worth changing meds to see if different result...good luck 1 1

Well, here it is: Blood Panel consists of 2 pages: Everything ok. I may need to go stationary to a hospital for a truly big check up. If inconclusive, I may want to consult a Haitian Woodoo Priest. 1

If yes, what other medication should I try? Have you had COVID or the mRNA vaccine? These can cause long term weakness and fatigue. If you wish to follow up I have a couple of recent articles from the Guardian where readers have had a bad time. I have had a very hard time trying to persuade any Thai doctor to investigate my fatigue problem, even though I have hard evidence that it started around the time I had the vaccines. Is your BP adequately controlled? There are so many different types of medicine for BP control that you should be able to find a combination of low doses of different classes that will be low side effects/high efficacy. I took the lowest available dose of 3 different types of BP medication and had good control with no side effects. I now take the lowest does of atenolol 25 mg and my BP is perfect....a bit low really. 2

And yes, the COVID vaccines have had some strange effects on some people. as mentioned by someone else a diet change might make the high BP disappear too and no side effects from natural foods that can lower your BP.

An amlopidine side effect description I have seen states "fatigue". I guess is a matter of interpretation as to that infers sleepyness or weakness. I have mild BP and mild copd . It is the copd that at times saps me . 1

Seppius Posted June 21, 2024 Posted June 21, 2024 Have you tried Magnesium? Worked for me Make sure you take the right type https://bodybio.co.uk/blogs/blog/types-of-magnesium
Sheryl Posted June 21, 2024 Posted June 21, 2024 Yes, this can definitely be from the medication and it is probably the amlodopine component to blame. You might try Valalsartan (or similar drug) alone. Discuss with your doctor and monitor BP closely after the change to make sure still controlled. 2

For several years now, I take 2 tablets per day - AMLODIPINE 5mg and ANGILOCK 50mg. I have never experienced any adverse effects. Yes, I do get tired of an afternoon especially during the very hot and humid weather, but after a siesta no problems. 1 1

Jaggg88 Posted June 21, 2024 Posted June 21, 2024 Lethargy can be caused by vitamin B deficiency and is common as we age plus many meds block the uptake of this vitamin. Have your vitamin B levels checked. Injections are available for people with a deficiency.
