Kamala Harris Surges as Top Choice to Replace Joe Biden, Poll Reveals

Vice President Kamala Harris is emerging as the leading contender to replace President Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket, according to a recent poll. This development comes amidst growing pressure on Biden to reconsider his candidacy due to concerns about his performance, particularly after a heavily criticized debate with former President Donald Trump on June 27. Despite Biden's consistent assertions that he intends to stay in the race and the public support from key Democratic figures, speculation about his withdrawal continues to circulate.

The Economist/YouGov poll, conducted from July 7 to July 9, indicates that a significant majority of Democratic voters favor Harris as Biden's potential replacement. The survey reveals that 73 percent of Democratic voters "somewhat" or "strongly" approve of Harris taking over the candidacy. This is a notable increase from a previous poll conducted from July 3 to July 6, which showed a 66 percent approval for Harris in the same role.

Alternative candidates for the Democratic nomination, such as Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, trail behind Harris in popularity. Buttigieg, who was the second most favored choice, garnered 57 percent approval. Newsom and Whitmer received 50 percent and 45 percent approval, respectively.

However, the poll also highlights a division within the Democratic Party regarding Biden's candidacy. While 55 percent of Democratic voters believe Biden has the best chance of defeating Trump in a November rematch, only 46 percent expressed the same confidence in Harris. Additionally, when asked if Biden should step aside for another Democrat to run, 42 percent of Demcratic voters responded that he should "definitely" or "probably" step aside, whereas 45 percent felt he should remain the nominee.

The perception of Harris's qualifications for the presidency also varies significantly across party lines. While 79 percent of Democrats consider her qualified, a staggering 88 percent of Republicans believe she is not. Among all respondents, 45 percent said Harris is not "qualified to be president."

Resistance to Biden's candidacy is growing among some Democrats. Senator Peter Welch of Vermont became the first Democratic U.S. senator to call for Biden's withdrawal, and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi stated that Biden needs "to decide if he's going to run." High-profile Democrat and actor George Clooney also urged Biden to step aside in a New York Times opinion article, citing concerns about the president's ability to continue effectively.

Despite this growing dissent, Biden's campaign maintains that he is committed to running and winning against Trump. Harris has consistently supported Biden's decision to stay in the race, even as discussions about potential replacements intensify. The Economist/YouGov poll, conducted with 1,620 U.S. adults through online interviews, carries a margin of error of 3.2 percent. As the election approaches, the Democratic Party faces critical decisions about its leadership and strategy to ensure a successful bid for the presidency.

Lol, what Republican political consultant is behind this poll?  They love their dirty tricks but at least they haven't tried to deny the results of an election yet.....oh wait.

I also like Gretchen  Whitmer , and she would help bring in Michigan.  Of course Haris will help with the black vote. Everyone on the news shows  sees to think Biden will be out in a week or two. I think he is staying in because he does not want to go to the NATO Samit a lame duck, and is waiting for the GOP Convention so they would concentrate their fire on him.

Should read “Vice President Kamala Harris is being propped by the media and political cohorts to be the leading contender to replace President Joe Biden to the top of the Democratic ticket, according to a skewed poll.

The border Czar, harris.

What Is ‘Border Czar’ Kamala Harris Doing on the Border Crisis?

biden: I’ve asked her, the VP, today — because she’s the most qualified person to do it — to lead our efforts with Mexico and the Northern Triangle and the countries that help — are going to need help in stemming the movement of so many folks, stemming the migration to our southern border

If the gop gains control of 3 branches of Government, the cultural Marxist are so screwed, illegals coming in by the millions  will be investigated!

imop

Might have been a nightmare from the Korean BBQ I ate last night, but I recall someone recently polling an HRC/Kamala ticket and it polled even better.

Tell me it was just the spicy BBQ.  Please!

She would be crushed.  But.... you just never know, given that she would be given 24 hour tongue-baths by the media for 4 months.

She is perhaps the worst actual politician on a retail level that the Democrats could choose. Not saying she is stupid, but she IS in way over her head. She does do a couple things right, though. Most important, she allows the Democrats to use the millions of dollars donated to Biden- other candidates can not use it. She also checks the necessary boxes of having 2 X chromosines and having melanin.  She is most assuredly NOT "African American" in how most people would define the term- her largest part is Bramhin Indian, but she is brown so I guess that is enough.

and yet, presumably the same people rejected her in the primaries as a POTUS candidate. Clutching and straws comes to mind.

They have a problem with the candidate being out to lunch mentally, and want to replace him with an unlikable and IMO incompetent contender- way to go. Seems the Dems cupboard really is bare when it comes to an alternative to Biden, LOL.

Many on the planet IMO would not sleep well with her in charge.

IMO if she is really the best the Dems have to replace him, we ( in the west ) are all screwed. Xi would wet himself laughing if she became POTUS, IMO.

It's just name recognition.

There are much better choices particularly Whitmer  Klobuchar with VP.Shapiro.

They prefer political talent.

Sadly, I believe it could be true. Truly, I despair for the west's future if that the best they can find to lead it.

The sad truth is that I would take Harris over Trump, but that's not saying much. I don't like her and I think very few people like her, they just simply see her as a viable alternative to Trump. I think the party can do a lot better and I think it as stated in a New York Times recent editorial it is likely that the $90 million the party currently has could simply be transferred to the DNC, which could then aid the party in an election success. I think there are multiple governors that would be viable candidates.

And where is the alternative candidate to replace the sex offender, convicted criminal and serial liar that masquerades as the gop candidate called Trump?

Is he really the best candidate that the republicans can come up with?

He wasn't my first choice, but still far ahead of anyone the Democrats have on their rather thin bench.  Lots of potential democrat candidates are stepping aside. On the surface, they are pledging allegiance to Biden (and therefore Harris). But the reality is that they are looking ahead to 2028 and don't want to screw up their chances next time. Shapiro, Gov. Wes Moore, Sen. Mark Kelly, all will bide their time.
