perhaps I've been watching the wrong news and podcasts. Perhaps you could educate me as to why this is just an opinion. There is no need for this to go through parliament apparently, the present tax laws with tweeks are sufficient to put this into operation. It's clear that the tax office is targeting Thai companies and rich individuals who are taking advantage of the one year rule to avoid taxation but unfortunately we are now under the same umbrella.

You are suggesting that expats should get concessions just in case they may (or may not) pay taxes in the future.

 

I am keeping up, 'you have until March 2025 to pay' in no way suggests that the OP has paid tax, especially as the 2024 tax year has not yet finished.

How many ex-pats do you know that have started paying this new tax rule?

I topped up my Elder Card last week, but I didn't look to see if I'm still getting the discount.  It's peanuts, so I really don't care.  In fact, I felt guilty when I was getting the discounted rate, knowing what a lot of the Thai people make.  To whom even small money makes a big difference.

I am aware that we haven't yet paid tax, but we will so I think a discussion should already be taking place among the powers that be concerning a change in our status......but nothing, it's just pay up and keep the status quo, unless some noise is made now nothing will change.

I paid tax.  But I'm still pleased to see a country that's operated first and foremost for the benefit of its own citizens. 

 

My passport says I can leave if I don't like the terms and conditions on offer.

Yes that is what is being broadcast, a Brit I know has already been to a tax accountant and had his future tax worked out, 40k Baht. I've worked out mine using the table for deductions, wife, child, age, etc. and come to 28k.

Discrimination of any kind is in my opinion sinful.  In the US there are laws to make most people fairly equal, even if they are in the country illegally (which I don't agree with of course).  But here, I remit several million baht to the Thai economy yearly plus the VAT on food and other purchases too so yeah I don't agree that they don't treat us as they treat their own, and from this forum it seems that many of the citizens of this country don't contribute anywhere near as much as many expats contribute yearly.  Yeah, I disagree with discrimination but I also agree with the fact that people earning any kind of income as long as it is over a minimum, they should be paying income taxes to some country.  I see on you tube that many of the "nomads" are making hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly here - I hope they are payiing their fair share.  I have never asked for any discount (I am 77 years old) but sometimes when I give my drivers license to a kiosk for paying entrance, they do give me a discount due to age, and many times yeah I ask how come I don't have to pay full price and they smile and say you are OLD now!

It isn't the amount that is important it's the principle, I will probably be the only person in my village paying tax and yet they can get concessions that I don't qualify for.

The rules are the same as for Thais, no prediction needed. The tax on remittance of money to Thailand is fixed, the only thing in the balance is whether they will tax all earnings, dividends,interest etc. in our home countries. The German consulate letter I received for proof of pension for the IO contained a clause asking that I be spared paying tax in Thailand due to the double taxation agreement. As I don't pay tax in Germany I asked the German tax office for clarification, they told me that I am not taxed in Germany as they assumed I would pay tax in Thailand, so no help there.

There are many countries in the world that have discounts/concessions for residents, including Los Angles and the rest of America ?

Yes as there is an international agreement concerning tax liabilities and Thailand (under pressure so I read somewhere) has just signed up to this agreement, information from banks and other such organizations will pass freely to the tax offices of any signed up country, there is a big clamp down on tax avoidance.

People, we are all immigrants in this country - and judging by posts I've read here over the last few years, many if you are "economic migrants" taking advantage of the lower cost of living. 

 

Check out how your own country treats immigrants and, in particular , economic migrants, before complaining about Thailand.

Expats are not targeted on Sky Train.

 

Old Western senile seniors are not given the same rights as Thai seniors.

 

If you want the same rights, go back to your country. You are too old to be in Thailand anyway. Next you will be complaining how there are no accessible wheelchairs for you on Thai roads,

 

I dislike Thailand about certain issues as much as the next old senile sexpat, but this title is a bit too much.

Last tourist places visited was monthlong trip 2023 to USA. Let’s see Georgia’s Aquarium, Coca-Cola Museum, DisneyWorld, Universal Studios, NASA Kennedy Space Center, St. Augustine Nat’l Fort, Patriot Point, Montecello, Williamsburg, Jamestown, then a week going to the National Mall, sites, museums, White House, Capitol. My Thai Wife and Stepdaughter were changed any admission costs the same as myself as a U.S. citizen. No, Royal Thailand Tourism … discriminatory admission charges for non-Thais is not a wise not good thing to attract tourists. I am a Thai resident Expat for over a decade and should not be charged more for not being Thai.

64 1/2 years in USA, cannot remember separate charges for entrance fees based on nationality which is the subject under discussion.
