Pager Explosions in Lebanon Target Hezbollah Members 9 Dead Thousands Injured
Pager explosions rocked Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah members and leading to the deaths of nine people and injuries to thousands more. Fatalities are expected to rise significantly. The exact cause of the explosions is still under investigation, but experts who spoke to CNN believe that the blasts were the result of hardware tampering rather than a cybersecurity breach. However, this has yet to be confirmed by authorities. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah had earlier urged members and their families to avoid cell phones, calling them a security risk. "Shut it off, bury it, put it in an iron chest and lock it up," he declared in a speech, warning that cell phones could be exploited by adversaries. The explosions, which have been attributed to Israeli involvement by both Iranian and Hamas officials, have rattled Hezbollah and its supporters. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Israel of orchestrating the attack, labeling it as "Israeli terrorism" during a phone conversation with Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib. Hamas also condemned the attack, blaming "Zionist terrorist aggression" and expressing solidarity with Hezbollah and the Lebanese people. Insurgent Bomb Attack in Bannang Sata Injures 4 Soldiers
Picture from responders. A roadside bomb on September 17, targeted a paramilitary patrol from the 33rd Ranger Regiment in Bannang Sata District, Yala Province, injuring four soldiers. The explosive device, weighing over 50 kilograms, was buried along a rural road in Bajoh Village, Moo 2, Thung Luang Subdistrict. The blast sent an armored pickup truck flying into a nearby fruit orchard, leaving it severely damaged. The attack occurred around 10:00, prompting an immediate response from local authorities, including Pol. Lt. Col. Suriya Kuadam of Bannang Sata Police Station, and joint forces from police, military, and administrative units. Upon arrival at the scene, they found the destroyed Isuzu armored pickup belonging to the ranger unit. The injured soldiers were identified as Veerasak Buamuangkao, 31; Pracha Boonduang, 25; Woradet Sommuang, 34; and Tanisorn Malai, 33. All sustained internal chest injuries from the blast and were rushed to Bannang Sata Hospital for treatment by passing civilians who witnessed the incident. Further investigation of the blast site revealed a large crater approximately 2x1.5 metres wide, along with debris from the bomb, including electronic parts, shrapnel, wires, and pieces of a gas cylinder used in the explosive device. It is believed that the bomb was triggered remotely as the ranger unit's patrol passed by. According to preliminary findings, the paramilitary unit was conducting a routine patrol as part of a security plan when the insurgents, who had been hiding in the nearby brush, detonated the bomb. The blast flipped the armored vehicle, causing the soldiers' injuries. Human Trafficker Arrested in Samut Prakan for Forcing Victims onto Fishing Boats

Authorities have arrested a notorious human trafficker, known as "Jae Ja Paknam," in Samut Prakan, who was involved in a brutal human trafficking operation that forced victims into slave labour aboard fishing vessels. Those who resisted were thrown into the sea, with one survivor miraculously rescued after drifting for three days. On September 17, Pol. Maj. Gen. Sarut Khwaengsopha, Chief of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division (ATPD), ordered the arrest of 62-year-old Sompong (last name withheld), also known as "Jae Ja." The arrest warrant, issued by the Criminal Court in 2014, charged her with several offenses, including human trafficking, unlawful detention, and forcing individuals into slavery. The arrest took place at Wat Phothiyaram (Thong Khong) in Samut Prakan Province. The case first came to light in 2012 when the ATPD received a report from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security. The victim had been lured by labour brokers with promises of high-paying work on a fishing boat. Upon arriving in Samut Prakan, they were taken to Sompong’s karaoke bar, coerced into signing a slave labour contract, and confined to a room under threats of violence. Victims were then sent to various fishing boats, eventually being trafficked onto vessels in Malaysian waters. Many were forced to endure grueling working conditions and violent abuse. One victim, after resisting, was thrown into the sea, where they drifted for three days before being rescued by a passing Vietnamese cargo ship and returned to Thailand. Following the initial report, investigators gathered evidence to secure arrest warrants for five individuals involved in the operation. Several accomplices have already been arrested, but Sompong managed to evade capture for over a decade. After re-examining the testimonies of previously arrested suspects, investigators confirmed Sompong’s identity, leading to her capture. During questioning, Sompong admitted to her involvement in trafficking both Thai nationals and migrant workers onto fishing boats, where they were subjected to slave labour. She also revealed that she had been convicted of human trafficking in Samut Prakan previously and had served a three-year prison sentence. Sompong is now in custody and faces further prosecution by the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division. Authorities continue their efforts to dismantle human trafficking networks in the region. -- 2024-09-18 -
