Ex-PM Thaksin’s Dubai dreams dashed: Medical treatment declined

The Criminal Court dashed former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s hopes of jetting off to Dubai for medical treatment.

 

The embattled ex-leader requested to travel to the UAE from August 1 to 16, citing a slew of health issues, including chronic pneumonia, respiratory and coronary symptoms, a torn right rotator cuff, and spinal disc herniation. Thaksin, who celebrated his 75th birthday last week, claimed he needed to consult with physicians who had treated him during his previous stay in the Middle East.

 

Adding to the intrigue, Thaksin’s request included plans to meet several key figures in the UAE on what were described as personal missions. He assured the court that he would return to Thailand before his next court appearance on August 19, where he faces charges under the royal defamation law and the Computer Crime Act for remarks made during a 2015 interview with South Korean media.

 

However, the court remained unmoved, stating that Thaksin’s conditions could be adequately treated by doctors in Thailand. The judges also noted that his proposed meetings in Dubai had no medical relevance. Thaksin’s request was consequently denied, continuing his legal woes since his return from 15 years of self-imposed exile last August.

 

The former premier, who was ousted in a 2006 military coup, was swiftly sentenced to eight years in prison upon his return, later reduced to one year through royal clemency. After falling ill on his first night in prison, he spent six months in hospital before being paroled in February, reported The Nation.

Thailand jails Thaksin lawyers in "snack box" case

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's Supreme Court jailed a lawyer and two legal advisers of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Wednesday after an apparent attempt to bribe court officials with $60,000 (30,400 pounds) hidden in a paper grocery bag.

 

Pichit Chuenban and two associates representing Thaksin and his wife in a pending land-deal case were responsible for the 2 million baht left in the bag at the Supreme Court compound earlier this month, the court ruled.

 

The bag was found on the day that Thaksin, ousted in a coup in 2006, and his wife were due to appear on charges of violating graft laws that prevent serving politicians and their spouses from striking deals with state agencies.

Oh well, charter a helicopter to take him to a private airfield and use one of his multiple passports to escape the new charges.  Heck - won't the penthouse remand prison hospital be waiting once "dying Tony" comes back? They ain't never tossing Teflon Tony into Gen-Pop.

Thai Court Denies Thaksin Shinawatras Request to Travel Abroad for Medical Treatment

On July 31st, 2024, Thai national media reported that on July 27th, Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, a defendant in a Section 112 lèse-majesté case, requested permission to travel abroad. The court scheduled a hearing on the request for July 30th, and issued a ruling on the same day.

After examining the evidence, the court allowed Thaksin to be temporarily released while his case was under review, but prohibited him from leaving the country.

 

Thaksin sought to travel to the United Arab Emirates (Dubai) from August 1 to 16, 2024, for medical treatment. He reportedly plans to see medical experts on August 2nd and 8th for chronic pneumonia, respiratory and cardiovascular issues, a torn right shoulder ligament, and a herniated disc.

Court bars Thaksin from going to Dubai

 

The Criminal Court has dismissed as unnecessary Thaksin’s request to travel to Dubai next week, for medical consultations, stating that Thai doctors are qualified to take care for him.

 

In his request, submitted on July 27, Thaksin, who was freed on bail on June 17 pending a trial on a lèse majesté charge, mentioned that he also planned to meet some “important figures” during his stay in Dubai, tentatively between August 1 and 16.

 

Thaksin claimed that the doctors had previously treated him for respiratory problems, coronary artery disease, right rotator cuff tears, chronic pneumonitis and lumbar disc herniation during his self-imposed exile in the city.

 

He planned to meet these doctors on August 2 and 8, if the court had allowed him to travel abroad.

In his request, Thaksin mentioned that he also plans to meet with what he described as “important persons” on personal matters.

He is not only an embarrassment to Thailand but reflect the sad state of weak Thai laws where a convicted felony can evade serving full jail time and who now want to travel abroad during his parole …🤣🤣…

Obviously been overdoing it on the campaign trail, maybe if he were confined to home as per his parole conditions his condition might improve. He might even find time to play with his grandchildren.
