lack of appetite

Featured Replies

Does anyone else have this? Maybe it's an age symptom, I'm 76. I can go all day without eating and the next day just have one meal, in fact I can't remember the last time that I felt really hungry. Often I will eat because I feel that I should do so but without any enthusiasm. When I look at what my 17 year old son can eat it amazes me, he eats more in one sitting than I can in 3 days and yet I have no negative symptoms, I don't weigh much but then I have always been slim.

Not 70 yet so I can't yet relate, but I've been eating 4-5 meals a day ever since I started working out,50 years ago, and still do. I've had to cut the amount down since i don't workout as much as i did before, especially the rice here. I've never lost my appetite as I love food.

Not quite as extreme but neither my wife or myself eat much these days ( 66 and 60 )  Sometimes our eveningf meal is just a bowl of porridge and banana !!

The strange thing is that even if we do eat a lot or don't eat much our weight stays almost exactly the same. Don't worry about it/ Just think of the money you are saving.

You are lucky. I want to eat half a pig.

You are really asking for some replies asking how self-consumption works. 555

I get this.

I'm 65, and I still live a pretty active physical life, at home and work

But I really don't want to eat that much anymore.

I basically eat one meal a day at dinner.

I 'might' get a snack during the day, but thats rare

For whatever reason, regardless of what we are doing, our bodies just slow down

One thing that always perplexed me is when seeing real old people out and about and they are skin-bone skinny, but obviously still active. I figure some day soon I'll get to the same stats.  I also eat less these days, about half a bowl of rice for dinner, and bit more for lunch. So I try to compensate with a mini-meal somewhere in between, afternoon snack or pre-dinner "appetizers" One thing I still have appetite, I guess that comes from exercising.

I have started down that road recently.....often get to say, 5 pm, and realise I haven't eaten.

The annoying thing is I kind of feel hungry, but nothing really appeals. Roll on the day I look in the mirror and think I look skinny.

It surprises me when i hear guys 70-80 need to diet because they are overweight or obese @Lacessit you'd think they'd be naturally slimmer without much effort

I'm 78 years now but I still have a good appetite, but I only have 2 meals a day now. Always a good breakfast which I take my time over and dinner around 5:30pm. I practice intermittent fasting, so once dinner's over that's it until the following day.

I have read that our 'resting metabolic rate' decreases as we age. which could account for the OP's issue.

I'm at 73 and feel the same, only eat 'coz I know I should, small sandwich for lunch, small evening meal half of what most people eat, and a fruit yogurt for 'pudding'.

I kinda get that.

I also eat because I know I need to eat, but not necessarily because i want too.

There are many an evening when my wife is cooking and I know I like what she's cooking but I just don't have any appetite to eat.

Very strange how our bodies change as we age

I also think this phenomenon is mainly a male thing. I don't think women experience the same thing, as not all men experience it too

You need to get your protein in.

Maybe some protein powder and mix it with milk make a shake
