Thai PBS, TJA Slam General Prawit for Reporter Intimidation

The Thai PBS and the Thai Journalists' Association (TJA) are urging Palang Pracharath party leader General Prawit Wongsuwan to take responsibility for allegedly intimidating a Thai PBS reporter.

 

General Prawit, known for his ambitions to become Thailand's prime minister, showed visible agitation when approached by the Thai PBS reporter. She had questioned him about whether he had watched the MPs' live broadcast voting to appoint Pheu Thai party leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra as Thailand's 31st prime minister, reported Thai PBS.

 

In a video clip, General Prawit is seen grabbing the reporter’s head with his hand while repeatedly asking, “What’s the question?”

 

Thai PBS released a statement asserting that their reporter was merely fulfilling her professional duties at the time of the incident and denouncing the physical assault as unacceptable.

 

They stressed that such an incident has psychological repercussions not only for the affected reporter but also for the broader journalist community.

 

The Thai PBS station demanded that General Prawit acknowledge his responsibility for the incident and issued a call for accountability.

 

The TJA also issued a statement condemning General Prawit’s actions. They characterized his behaviour as an act of intimidation against press freedom, noting that reporters need to be able to perform their duties without fear of reprisal. They called for General Prawit to take full responsibility for his conduct.

 

Furthermore, the TJA urged the public to show mutual respect towards individuals in different professions. They emphasised the importance of managing expressions of anger to avoid negative impacts on others.

 

The incident has ignited discussions about the treatment of journalists in Thailand and the need for safeguards to protect them from undue intimidation and physical harm while simply doing their jobs. As it stands, the call for accountability resounds strongly among Thailand's media and public alike.
