The debate thread.
House Republicans bemoan Trump debate performance: ‘Not good’ House Republicans are bemoaning former President Trump’s performance in the first — and potentially only — debate against Vice President Harris, acknowledging that the Democratic nominee successfully got under her GOP opponent’s skin. Several times throughout the more than 90-minute debate in Philadelphia, Harris appeared to try to bait Trump with attacks on matters that hit close to home — the size of his rallies, the magnitude of his family fortune, world leaders “laughing” at him — in an effort to thwart his composed posture. Some House Republicans say she succeeded. “I’m just sad,” one House Republican who is supportive of Trump told The Hill. “She knew exactly where to cut to get under his skin. Just overall disappointing that he isn’t being more composed like the first debate.” (more) https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4873509-trump-harris-debate-house-republicans/ -

Best bank account for 800k which can be accessed even from Overseas
Same for me, except I didn't need the signed lease and I didn't need to pay anything. I don't remember if I needed the tm30 receipt which used to be stapled into my passport. -

PM Paetongtarn faces ethics probe over mini-heart gesture
The previous prime minister Prayut hit out at a reporter and the watchman recently slapped a lady news reporter. Twice. So obviously for them , Paetongtarn making a heart sign is a capital crime that overrides the two others. -

Best bank account for 800k which can be accessed even from Overseas
There are some other details of my initial visit to SCB that I didn't include. I told the SCB staff that I wanted to open the SCB EZ Savings account. That account has no bank book. For some reason they actually first opened a standard savings account for me. They told me they did so because there was some transaction in the bank branch was not possible with the EZ Savings account. I no longer remember which type of transaction that was. After they had completed opening the standard savings account they started the process of opening the EZ Savings account. It was during that process that the branch staff ran into a problem. That's the point where I asked them if I needed a Thai tax ID for them to complete the process. The next day I came back with my tax ID and the EZ Savings account was opened. To summarize: no work permit was required, SCB staff could open the standard savings account with no Thai tax ID but for the EZ Savings account a Thai tax ID was required. Non of it makes any sense to this dumb farang. -

Revisiting History: The Unlikely Campaign to Vilify Winston Churchill
Why would Hitler busy himself with what government Britain has? What difference would it make to him? Sure, he did not like democracy, but why would he care what system the UK has, or what gov ernment? There was no underlying animosity in ideological terms between Nazism and British Imperialism that reached the same degree as the animosity between Nazism and Communism. Germany would have had the colonies in the East, the British would have had their Empire. There's not even geographic competition between the two. -

You absolutely did. It's also useless to appeal to your sense of logic and therefore I'm done wasting my time on a zionist fan boy like you. Believe whatever you want. I don't give a <deleted>. -

Revisiting History: The Unlikely Campaign to Vilify Winston Churchill
I think that you are moving into trolling territory. However, one last time. When Hitler came to power in Germany, he quickly set about dismantling the German constitution. Hitler did not believe in democracy. Surely even you will concede that? Ergo the idea that Hitler would have allowed the UK to remain a democracy and hold a fair and fair general election is absurd. Pushing the absurdity even further, if such elections were, in fact, held the prospect that Hitler would have permitted Atlee - a socialist - or Churchill - his avowed enemy - to form a government is patently ridiculous. -

US House Foreign Affairs Committee Report on the Afghanistan Withdrawal
Johnson is an overt Trump partisan and acolyte who wouldn't hold Trump responsible for anything anti-Trumpish, including the end of the U.S.'s presence in Afghanistan. Examples: Trump’s private demand to Johnson: Help overturn my conviction ... "It’s a campaign he orchestrated in the days after his May 30 conviction on 34 felony counts in New York, starting with a phone call to the man he wanted to lead it: Speaker Mike Johnson. ... Johnson sympathized with Trump’s frustration. He’d been among the first batch of Republican lawmakers to appear alongside Trump at the Manhattan trial. He’d been harping on Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s case and the alleged broader abuse of the justice system since before he took the gavel. [emphasis added] The speaker didn’t really need to be convinced, one person familiar with the conversation said: Johnson, a former attorney himself, already believed the House had a role to play in addressing Trump’s predicament. The two have since spoken on the subject multiple times." https://www.politico.com/news/2024/06/13/donald-trump-conviction-mike-johnson-00163128 Along with: Speaker Johnson says Trump ‘clearly prevailed’ in debate "House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said that former President Trump “clearly prevailed” in the Tuesday ABC News debate against Vice President Harris, praising his “authenticity” and arguing the moderators leaned in favor of the Democratic nominee. “Well, I will tell you what, President Donald Trump is the reigning presidential debate champion, and even though the contest was three to one last night, he clearly prevailed,” Johnson said during his Wednesday morning appearance on FOX Business Network’s Mornings With Maria with guest anchor Cheryl Casone." https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4874212-trump-harris-debate-speaker-mike-johnson/ Johnson is delusional! -

Don’t kill the golden goose! Tax reforms may drive away expats
It is getting riskier and riskier staying here. And cost benefit analysis? There is no cost benefit if all these taxes come to fruition. Zero benefit for the expat. In my opinion, now that this is all being proposed, mentioned by government, etc: it means there are many financial risks staying here in Thailand. Global taxation means risk of taxing offshore wealth, sale of personal assets and preserved funds (such as Superannuation) where tax exemptions and discounts would normally mean zero to minimal tax, could be taxed at much higher rates by Thailand. Unremitted money being taxed? Money not destined for Thailand taxed?Nightmare scenario. Massive headaches filing tax paperwork, double accountants (more expenses) and early tax reports for mismatched financial years in countries where tax years end different months. The ones that are 'tut tutting' the rest of us, are generally those who have their own circumstances where they are tax-exempt, pay taxes already via business etc in Thailand, have a tax advantage paying tax here or are just masochists. The majority of us do not have any advantage whatsoever. Anyone buying a condo or a new car this year, or any other big ticket item from remitted money is crazy IMO. You could face a massive massive tax bill, making that purchase a huge capital loss overall and therefore a very bad investment. I will not be buying any more condo or items here, am planning to exit and spending frugally. I may be taxed a bit next year but that will be the last time. And ready for an exodus.
