Thailand likely detects a new, more dangerous mpox variant

Thailand announced on Wednesday a probable first case of a new lethal variant of mpox, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has termed a worldwide health crisis.

The affected person likely carrying the strain is a European visitor who traveled from Africa to Thailand, according to Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, the Chief of Thailand's Disease Control Department.

The individual is currently isolated in a hospital while lab tests are being done to identify the strain, thought to be Clade 1.

Thongchai confirmed that the patient has mpox, but it's crucial to verify that it's not the Clade 2 variant. He showed certainty that the individual has the Clade 1 variant, but the final lab result is still two days away.

Over the past few months, mpox has seen a surge in Africa with outbreaks reported in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda.

Mpox is a virus-caused disease that spreads from infected animals to humans through close physical contact, causing symptoms like fever, muscle pain, and large skin sores similar to boils.

Although mpox has been known for decades, a new and more lethal strain known as Clade 1b has recently caused a surge in mpox cases.

According to the WHO, the Clade 1b variant results in death in about 3.6% of cases, with children being more susceptible. The virus, previously named monkeypox, was first identified in 1958 within research monkeys in Denmark.

The Democratic Republic of Congo reported over 16,000 cases and 500 deaths from mpox this year alone.

On August 15, the first case of the Clade 1 variant was confirmed outside Africa in Sweden.

Test Results for Suspected Severe Monkeypox Case to be Released on Friday

A 66-year-old European man, who came to Thailand from Africa on August 14, may have contracted a severe form of Monkeypox called 'Clade 1B'. We expect confirmation on Friday, according to the Department of Disease Control (DDC).

The DDC's Director General, Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, stated during a news conference that they're waiting for further tests to prove if this is the first case of the severe variant in Thailand. The man, who came from an African country where this variant is active, developed fever and blisters a day after his arrival.

He sought medical help and tests were conducted to determine the nature of his sickness. Tests have ruled out the less severe variant of the disease 'Clade 2', leaving a potential diagnosis of 'Clade 1B', based on some unclear results. To be certain, further tests are being carried out.

Before the conclusive results, the department is taking precautions by tracing 43 passengers who shared the same flight with him. These individuals, Thais and foreigners alike, will be monitored for 21 days for any symptoms. The department will confirm whether he has the severe 'Clade 1B', which will make him the first in Thailand if he tests positive.

The less severe 'Clade 2' variant was noticed in Thailand two years ago with around 800 cases reported so far. Recent reports from the World Health Organisation declared the severe 'Clade 1B' variant a matter of international public health concern.

This severe strain, accompanied by a high death rate, is predominant in central and eastern Africa. The less severe 'Clade 2' variant is found in western Africa and has spread to multiple countries, including Thailand, noted Dr. Thongchai.

We need to wait for the results on Friday for the infected & other potentially infect passengers before the government needs to decide on possible urgent containment measures.  Panic now is useless, knowledge is power.  It allows for sensible decisions.

Many a true word spoken in jest - let's see where this goes!

As long as the lock-downs start after my return to Thailand in a few weeks then I'll be happier there than in the UK.

Rather London than the South Devon coast - it's grim down here at the best of times.

London is not much better in winter.

I get your point though, Devon is lovely, in the brief English summer.

South Devon is where the English Riviera is located.  😁     I suggest you visit this website for  suggestions on how to visit the picturesque South Devon region.      https://www.visitsouthdevon.co.uk/        I doubt they have machete waving thugs running about like they do in London and the north west.  The only machetes I see now are in Thailand are at the market. They know how to slice their melons with gusto.   If you miss  the SRT, visit the Babbacombe Cliff Railway. 🙂

If we know Africa is the source of this potentially deadly disease, why can it be so easy for these f..ls  to easily travel to other countries. Simply put a ban on travelling into any country of people who have been there, except from the country where they came from.

If they lie to you blame them. If they lie to you again and you believe it again, blame yourself.

Really shouldn't be much of an issue in Thailand as transmission only occurs via skin to skin contact i.e. an infected person must have physical contact with another person. A couple of years there was an outbreak in the States (I want to say less than a dozen or so) who all were on board the same gay cruise ship, go figure.

Still think it's funny that they had to change the name from monkey pox to mpox so as not offend the monkeys. Well, how do you think the chickens feel after all these years, or cows for that matter?

I do not understand why immigration can not simply put a short time ban on allowing anyone from africa into the country. Clearly they are not acting on the information about how quickly it is spreading throughout the continent. Also, it would not affect tourism numbers so much but if the mokeypox strain reaches this country then any hope of containing it will be gone.

From today's NYTimes:

Clade I is further differentiated by how it is transmitted, and who is most vulnerable. Clade Ia, epidemiologists have said, is spread through household contact and exposure to affected animals, in addition to sexual contact. So far, it is young children who are most vulnerable to this subtype. Clade Ib appears to spread mainly through heterosexual sex.

It is spread through close contact, skin to skin, mother to child (one death of 10 week old child) has a 3-17 day incubation before any symptoms

Crowded markets , people brushing past you, shaking hands, hugging all MAY transmit if skin to skin

There is a vaccination available
