Pattaya Tourist Police Volunteers Undergo Training to Protect Tourists Ahead of High Season

There is nothing wrong with the knowledge or education of the existing police volunteers. Better they focus on a real security guard program, ran and licensed buy government officials. A program that really sort out the bad apples and the ones lacking the necessary stable mentality to do the work the right way. If that happens, we can start talk about improving safety and protection for tourists.

So it is really about 'know the rules' and do your duty?

Not sure where the safety bit comes in there.

The first thing on the list should be a warning to pedestrians from the USA, Europe, China etc

"Here you must look right, left, right before crossing the road and keep on looking (and listening) as you cross."

What that proud "fist in the air" means? Is it something from Geguevara times?

Or add for some AV flick?

They all are smiling - so rather latter than something revolutionary. Well, kinda nasty.

I've heard stories about money extortion by these cowboys as policemen often can't request by themselves.

Nasty people

To protect tourists from what?

When I was a police volunteer in Phuket (many years ago), I was asked this question on several occasions by foreign tourists.

My answer?  I'm here to protect you from the Thai police!

The only way that might work out is if they hit the Thai security guy over the head before he got his kick in... or at least blocked him.

I really just don't see it!

If the police were effective, they bars would not need their own security.

Yes. There are many myths that persist.   Sometimes the reality takes a bit of time to set in, but it eventually does appear.
