Wow, that's cheap, maybe we could persuade Georgie to go Vietnam next holiday.

It was a local commune clinic but the doctor works in the government hospital day time and this is his own business night times.

Shocked tonight to cash my Australian dollars to get a lousy 21.73 , 2173 baht  $100

I suppose it all depends where you cash in your $'s, and that is a low rate. That said, you never cash in all of your $'s on a low rate. I think I heard you were in Pattaya, surely there are exchange booths there with good rates, just have to shop around, or ask about, but 21.73 isn't right, I keep an eye on the rate out of curiosity, and I thought it was hovering around 22.30 ?

Can someone please calculate maybe a mathematical expert how much is 100 baht in AUD please !

100/21.73 = $4.60 based on the rate you exchange your $'s on.

I paid nearly $6 for a 6 inch subway ,same price in Australia

Come on m8, you come here for what a week or 2 at best and tell us that the prices here in Thailand are comparable to Australia. Not a fat chance, as for fast food chains, sure you will pay the same basically worldwide, but why would you eat that crap and pay the prices they ask, when you can eat a good Thai meal for about $2.00.

Incorrect ! You will pay more in Tourist areas, did you try Big C or Lotus's, not those walk in off the street places where they stick it to those dumb farang tourists. I remember when my cousin came over and I met him in Phuket, I said anything you want, run it by me 1st, I went into a 7/11 store to get a 600ml water for 10 baht (46c), which you would pay 5 times that $2.75 ++++ in a 7/11 in Oz, any how, I saw him across the road in one of those touristy shops where they sell beach towels, cozzies etc etc and he had a beach towel in his hand and as I walked in he said how much and the lady showed him her calculator with 600 baht on it $27.61 using your exchange rate, he was about to buy it, when I said 300 baht, she said no, 500, I said thanks, and grabbed my cousin, walked into another one down the road, grabbed a beach towel and said 300 baht, 400 she said, I said Mi Ouw, 300 baht and she said ok, sucker born every minute.

Your shopping in the wrong places, Big C 100 baht ($4.60), personally, I buy my sandals, thong type (Sketchers) 1,200 baht ($55) when on sale from Lazada for about 750 baht ($34.50), as I am in them most of the day, and they are great for supporting my back and legs vs the old thong which offers me nothing except leg and back pain in my opinion.

Is Vietnam cheaper,I still have 3 weeks to go on my work leave , I feel like I should go back to Australia where it's cheaper .what an expensive place

How do you afford to retire you guys who only have a small Government pension ??

Australia is not cheaper than Thailand, if you think it is, your delusional. I will be there next year, and accommodation starts at $250 a night, I just spent a week outside Pattaya in a really nice hotel for 1,150 baht per night $53, including a huge buffet breakfast, swimming pool and full gym.

For the record, I am not on the Age Pension which is about 50k baht from what I hear, and if it was only me, I could live on that here easily, but I budget on $100 a day or 2,173 baht a day for a family of 4, that includes two domestic trips a year, running a car and eating good quality food.

You need to set a budget, rent a good place that will make you happy, for say 10k baht a month in Hua Hin and start learning the ropes, e.g. where to eat for reasonable money, where to shop, where to drink, where to hang.

Then all you got to do is put up with immigration once a year, 4 x 90 day reporting online, enjoy the smoke season and Thai drivers for a starter, if you can survive that, your almost there.

Personally, I wouldn't return to Australia as the cost of living there is at least twice that of Thailand, excluding rent, because you won't have anything left from your Age Pension once you pay that.

What was that you were saying earlier about comparing prices of Thailand vs Australia 🤑

Oh as for Vietnam, I have no idea, the world is your oyster Yorgo.

In my opinion, the health care system is probably better for me in Thailand. I am married to a Thai ex-government worker so I am on her health social security. Free medical treatment and free prescription medications. In Australia, you have to contribute to most medical services and still buy (albiet subsidised) prescription medications. In addition, the wait time to see a specialist is often 3 months or more. In Thailand, you can usually get in within a week.

In Australia,I used to pay $2,500 per year in prepscriptions and co-payments. Here it is free.

I read your comment with interest. I used to work at a govt uni in isan and when quitting I joined the SS scheme 420 baht a month. I have access to a large public hospital. Is this the same for you?

Are you saying that your meds are for free in the public hospital system. Re wait times, I have found they are quite long in my public hospital that I have access to.

Vietnam sucks and so do its people. As soon as you arrive someone will be trying to shaft you out of your money. we were there new yrs last year and I was walking on a quiet road in the gutter area. A local guy on a motorbike purposely tried to ride into me to get me to walk on the pavement.  My wife and child also nearly got hit on a zebra crossing. Its worse than thailand.

That is the rate paid to residents, they have a lower rate for those living overseas which excludes some allowances.

Pension overseas is $2303 per month.

50,000 baht/month, easy enough for a single person to live in Thailand on that.

My experience. People are pretty miserable. You will hear nothing but honking everywhere you go. If it was anything near Thailand in quality it would be stealing their tourists but instead they have a dismissal 5% return rate for tourists and for good reason.

For those who don't know It's a joke Joyce is a reference to an expression on Australian tv from around 55 to 60 years ago

It actually has two meanings.

In the UK, it refers to a dim-witted character in "Little Britain" who would make inappropriate or offensive comments, then deflect criticism with the phrase.

In Australia, it was inverted in meaning. The comment was used by Graham Kennedy and Joff Ellen to females such as Rosie Sturgess and Toni Lamond to imply they were too dumb to understand.

If you're having financial difficulties living of social security you could try to ask food banks around. There is no shame in asking for help.

Work more.  Save, invest more.  State pensions were never meant to be one’s sole means of retirement income.

Naturally this reply won’t go over well with the “I want it now “ crowd.

Hence they have a low income retirement.

couldn't agree more, state pensions are pretty much the minimum someone needs to survive in later life. there is plenty advice during ones working life on the importance of making adequate financial preparations and plans for retirement, some people take notice, some don;t.

I did that for awhile in the USA, but only for the government surplus distributions.

Also, I went later in the day (the real needy people always line up first thing right when it opens).

The government food is paid for by your tax dollars, not donated, so there is no reason to not partake (it never really runs out).

There was some shame in the scene though, being near a military base and all and seeing military families there was a bit off putting. Of course, they may have understood it was government supplies. Either way, they need to get some real cheese and not that processed junk, it's unhealthy.

I live Hua Hin.  I am from UK, also living on Pension, but I have additional income for now also.

When you plan, do so with a worse case scenario regarding exchange rate.

For example, look at how many baht you spend each month now.

Then do a conversion using the worse case scenario.

ie.  40,000 a month at 40 baht.

Is this going to be affordable?

If not, look at other options.........but there are not many to find that are better than Thailand.

I went to Da Nang in Vietnam as I had heard how great it was.

In my opinion.........its the opposite.  Its the worst place i have been in SE Asia.

Wont go into why, have not got time..........but everything was <deleted>e.

Maybe another place in Vietnam would be better.......but for sure, it was NOT cheaper than Thailand.
