Doom I think is my all time favourite retro game... I played it when it was the newest cutting edge state of the art masterpiece ( it still is a masterpiece)

with a soundblaster card and set of speakers or headphones  made for some jump out of your set hair-raising moments..I loved it so much I bought the I and II box set

on 3.5 inch "floppy discs"

risk running an unpatched operating system with no security updates... - not a great idea if you're connecting to the internet with it.

I ran w7 up to a few months ago with no problems and even logged in to secure US government sites without any security issues. It’s how the os is configured and not baiting oneself in shady practices.

But my first post said they offer free upgrades

But the last upgrade for Win 10, to version 22H2, two years ago, was its final upgrade. And that final upgrade won't receive further updates, notably security updates, after Oct. 14, 2025.

Still play Zork or Dungeons and Dragons as it was initially called, as well as Space Quest. I'm absolute crap at Computer Games, so one day I'll actually manage to finish one of them.

Time seems to be running out.

Your point?  You are much better off upgrading to Win11, even if they manage to prevent official updates, than staying on older Win10 software which is definitely not getting official updates.

Thanks. I have seen a number of articles recently as I think there is almost exactly a year to go.

I think I may be switching to Mint or similar for the majority of my usage depending on what other options surface in the interim.

This would be the best decision you could possibly make.

Mint is fine, I guess, if you prefer that flavor.

However, my heart belongs to OpenSUSE 15.6, and the lizard.

Either way is good, as long as it's Linux.

You will not be sorry for dumping Windows.

I dumped Windows, completely, several months ago.

Best decision I have made during the past 5 years.

Years ago, I used Linux, exclusively, and only installed Windows for a specific purpose.

Now, there seems to be no reason not to use OpenSUSE.

I am still extremely happy with it.

In fact, it just gets better...and....BETTER.

Same here, bought a Lenovo p3 with w11 and messed with it for about 45 minutes after debloating it then scraped it. Got w10 to behave like w7, everything operates as it should.

My ol' Lenovo Win10/i7 (8th or 9th gen)/16gb/1TB gaming laptop is struggling with speed...slow bootups & updates and lagging multitasking. Rendered unusable when Windows is updating.

That shouldn't be the case.

What is the i7 processor name?

The trick is to buy slightly used from known nerd who has re-programmed junk out.

I did that ( $ 2500 laptop for $450 cash) and it works pretty well except EDGE sheeet uses lot of RAM and you can't delete nor stop it. It over heats now and then.

I only use Firefox and very little Chrome.

I miss Win98SE.

Buying slightly used is fine but it's easy enough to remove bloatware yourself.  No technical skills required.

Plenty of stuff online to help you get rid of it although I agree it does take some tenacity.

We even had a thread on here some/many months ago about doing just that.

After XP was declared obsolescent, I switched to Debian which is a complete free operating system. I’ve never looked back since.

Debian and derivatives are super stable. Running MX Linux, KDE, for about a year now on my old laptop--where I really don't want any drama while I'm traveling--and it's been great.

Does any member have any experience with Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC?

I have read it is a debloated version on Windows 10, and is for businesses,  Eg.  no Candy Crush etc.

Support for this version of Windows 10 continues until 2032, and you can still buy a license / key for it.

Windows 10 Pro v Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC.

Did you get this month's security updates?

My supported and unsupported hardware are both running the exact same version of Win11 and both have the exact same update history.  That includes Windows Defender anti-virus and malicious software removal tool updates.  So yes.

If updates stop at some point I am still better off than I would be if I left the laptop on Win10 imo.  All my computers are now running the same OS.  There is also the possibility of a workaround being found if they try stop updates.

Ran across a useful script, mentioned favorably by a redditor, for unintended installations of Win 10 and 11. A bit geeky, but it should be manageable by an average user if motivated. I mention this as some here will be moving to 11 in due course.

Quote

The Most Notable Tweaks & Registry Entries:

  • Bypasses Windows 11 System Requirements.
  • Removes Preinstalled Bloatware Apps.
  • Bypasses FORCED Microsoft Account creation during Onboarding Experience.
  • Disables Windows Spotlight.
  • Disables Xbox GameDVR.
  • Customizes Start Menu and Taskbar settings.
  • Disables various Windows features like Cortana, Telemetry, and Location Tracking.
  • Configures Windows Update to only install security updates and delay other updates for 1 year (max period).
  • Disables Windows Error Reporting, Update Delivery Optimization, and Windows Remote Assistance (not RDP).
  • Sets various performance and privacy-related registry keys, mostly found in the ChrisTitusTech WinUtil.
  • Enables and sets the Ultimate Performance power plan as active.
  • Sets numerous Windows services to manual or disabled to optimize performance.
  • Enables Dark Mode by default.
  • Aligns the Start Button in Windows 11 to the left by default.
  • Makes the Taskbar on Windows 10 Small and Transparent.
  • Executes PowerShell and batch scripts to apply additional tweaks and remove specific applications like Microsoft Edge (Standard & Core Only), OneDrive, and Teams.

Note

Due to the removal of Microsoft Edge, I also include a Powershell Script on the Desktop called "LAUNCH-CTT-WINUTIL.ps1"

  • Make sure you are connected to the internet, then right click on this file and select Run with Powershell.
  • Accept the UAC prompt and it will launch the Chris Titus Tech Windows Utility and you can use that to install your browser of choice (even Edge) and any other software for that matter.

I'm well aware of the work arounds to get Windows 11 on unsupported hardware.

As another member posted, in another thread, Microsoft have "patched" a stop to these work arounds.

Whether Microsoft have patched all work arounds at this stage, I don't know, but there is plenty on the internet that they have patched at least some.

Question is, are you better off with Windows 11 that Microsoft may eventually block all updates to hardware that is unsupported, or staying with Windows 10, and paying for extended support?

I'll wait closer to October 2025 to see how it plays out.

I'm aware of some modified versions of Windows 11 to get around the unsupported hardware issue.

What else COULD be in that modified version of Windows 11 that MAY benefit the hacker and compromise the user????

I'm still using Windows 10 on two old notebooks. One will be retired before the support for Windows 10 will end, the other one will be converted to Linux.

As an example, I have one device that is Core i7 with 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD.  It's unsupported hardware.

The next step up would probably be a Core i9, 16GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD.

Is Core i7 really that outdated????

Is there a reason why you have deliberately left out the Generation of the i7 CPU?

DIY if you are afraid of the script.

My 9 year old 'home made' i5 PC, 8GB RAM, 256 & 1TB SSDs, originally W8, then 10, now 11 via Rufus, and latest upgrade this week to 24H2, is working perfectly.
