(Not) paying tax for my motorcycle - consequences?

I have to admit since Covid I didn't pay any tax for my motorcycle.

I renewed the insurance, because I could do that by mail. But I didn't ask my dealer to present my bike to the (transportation?) office for inspection and paying taxes.

Is that a problem? And if, in what way is it a problem?

 

I own the bike, and the bike has low milage. Likely I will never sell it.

Maybe some more information from the past.

Once I owned a bike which I didn't use for years. Later I asked someone competent in a big bike shop about what I can do if I want to use the bike again. He told me I just have to pay the taxes from the last years and all will be fine.

I never did that, I sold that bike like it was. So, I can't confirm myself if this works.

Why not just get it caught up? If you get stopped by an individual, it might be a small fine. If you get stopped at a checkpoint, it will likely turn into a big PITA.

I have the government insurance.

I can just tell an agent to renew it for me. I transfer money and receive the insurance document per mail.

 

Because my bike is older than 5 years it has to be presented and inspected when taxes are paid.

Why didn't I do it? Simple answer: because I was lazy and didn't think it's important.

The insurance is important, that's why I renewed that one.

Your insurance is probably useless, as illegal to drive an 'unregistered' MB.  Way too easy for them to deny a claim.  UP2U

 

Not a fan of ins or taxes, but really is inexpensive, and protects you if you do hurt someone.  Whether your fault of not.  Sh!t happens

The problem with insurance companies is they look for loopholes to escape from paying out.  So if your bike doesn't have the proper paperwork, perhaps they use that as an excuse to deny a claim should you need to file a claim.  Something to consider.

I think I read somewhere after 3 years of not paying tax the green book and number plate is void, need to re-register the bike at DLT, pain in the neck...! 

 

I'm surprised you ignored it and not paid tax, it's very simple... 

 

I'm not saying that's the case here, but those who don't pay tax usually is because don't want to go for inspection because they have a dodgy exhaust or changed paint or something like that which fails inspection - one of my friends included (!) ..., they usually say forgot, but there's more to it..., if that's not you, then just go and do it, takes 5 min for inspection ..., + 15 min queue to pay tax at DLT...! 

 

P. S. I also think insurance company may not pay up when it comes to claims with no tax...!

My bike is fine - except an aftermarket exhaust.

In the past I always asked the dealer where I bought it (with that exhaust) and who does the service for me to do the tax. I don't know if he changes the exhaust to the original for the inspection - he never told me or charged me for it.

Anyhow, you all convinced me that I should just do it. Because if there is a possible problem with the insurance, that is obviously a problem which should be avoided.

Your insurance is non valid. Vehicles can only obtain once vehicle is taxed 👍 if you are over 3 years of non payment, you will need to register the bike

Bring it to one of the drive-thru inspection points. Takes 5 minutes and you leave them the title. Pick it up a few days later. They do everything with minimal fee. Inspection. is mostly fake and done for show anyway. 

If you are caught driving it. Having other insurance will not matter. They can confiscate your bike and fine you if they want to be A-holes. Or make you pay bribe in any amount they choose.

The last time the police stopped me was years ago.

The worst I ever paid (cash) was 200B. Normally 100B.

And at the police station a couple of times 400B.

So, I am not too concerned about fines.

I was late to renew the bike Tax recently by about two weeks. I think I was charged  to 1baht late fee at the DLT

Do you think your insurance company would pay for any claims if the bike is not registered ?

I bought a Click from a lady in my village who hadn't tax it for 4 or 5 years.

When we went to change the ownership into my wife's name, I paid the outstanding years and taxed it for another incase it was used to go into town, where of course there are police checkpoints.

 

Many motorcycles aren't taxed here in Isaan, especially if used locally you won't ever be caught going from village to village and around the paddies as we never see a policeman.

1) The Tax can be obtained online and gets posted to your house (Wife & I did this about 2 months ago).

 

2) Now you have fallen behind, I'm not sure you can do this online as you have to pay a small fine.

 

3) Go to your nearest DLT and they'll deal it easily - charge back-pay for missing tax plus a tiny fine.

 

4) The issue for you at the moment, is while having no tax and risking fines etc.

Biggest risk is being stopped at a checkpoint and not having registration/tax up to date.  Fine and possible confiscation until fines paid.  I like to stay legal in all things here as when caught violating a rule/law you are at the mercy of the police at that time.  Not the same as for Thais.  

 

As noted by others go to one of the inspection shops (Yellow gear shapped image) and they will do inspection as over five years old and handle paperwork with DLT.  Just need Green Book.  I had registration expire while gone for covid and when I returned I took bike to have inspected and registration paid.  They charged for the duration of the expired term and it went to the usual expiry date, not a year from the date I did the renewal.  Luckily I noticed one day and then had to do another renewal.  If your official expiry date is slightly in the future it may be worth waiting until near that date to have all extended for another year so as not to do again in a short period of time.

As others have said, the insurance is not valid without the tax paid.

 

IIRC it's only about 200 baht, most of the cost is in the insurance itself.

Not a good idea not to pay , after 3 years they will cancel the registration, then it becomes a major headache

For every year since 2019 in which you have not paid, you have to pay the tax plus a fine......
