A 'Vanuatu-Chinese couple'. Right.

I bet 5 million in USDT that 'Sai' is a Chinese national involved in some sort of shady business. These guys all have passports from Vanuatu, Dominica, Cambodia etc because, when caught, they absolutely do not want to be deported back to the PRC.

Correct. These are shady fellows in shady business whose business contacts saw an opportunity to extort more money from them under the radar of the authorities.
they just use the real police to make it ‘official’.

Now you know it's a con.

So if he refuses again - they give him 280 million baht? 🙂

Proving once again that law enforcement in Thailand can never be trusted.

Something even school kids know about and can take advantage of(if they got any cops among their family members).

Their favorite quotation: My dad is a cop so that  he can dodge charge against me.

I lived in Mexico, where the police were just as corrupt. Sadly, they never fixed the problem.

In Thailand, Arrest/Charge against bureaucrats usually means Temporary Transfer to the unpopular post.

Rarely lead to the dismissal, prosecution, and imprisonment.

Deemed the privilege of the king's subordinate (irrespective of the ranks).

Just like Diplomatic Immunity by Vienna Convention.

At least it was worthwhile - much better than the highway robbery of a few hundred Baht for an offense never committed 😉

committing illegal acts while holding an official position

The problem in Thailand seems to be that the very agencies created to detect and prosecute crimes are themselves corrupt. Thus, these surprise arrests. Country needs independent  investigative prosecurial inspectors perhaps drawn from public nominations rather than from government insider agencies.

This is a total shambles for Thailand as a country.....we are all aware of the alledged corruption but now I feel as though I can't trust any uniform !
Boycott and go elsewhere safer, trustworthy and even cheaper !

Surely, this must be a misprint?

Yes, that must be a a wrong translation or an error in the Thai source.

Same for any kid anywhere whos dads a cop. The problem with Thai cops is any kid can be the son on a cop for a price.
