Transport Trang Airport Revamp Nears Completion Amid Ongoing Oversight
Picture courtesy of The Nation After years of setbacks, the long-awaited revamp of Trang Airport is finally approaching take-off, with a new terminal expected to partially open next month. The ambitious 4.4-billion-baht overhaul faced considerable delays and contractor issues, but now one major phase is nearing completion. Rukchanok Srinork, a Bangkok MP overseeing state budgets, announced that a new contractor is finalising the 1.06-billion-baht passenger terminal. This project phase was left unfinished when the original contractor withdrew, leaving it 98% complete. Despite these challenges, Rukchanok expressed optimism for the people of Trang, hailing the progress on one of many stalled government projects. A previous inquiry into the delays revealed contractor failures as the root cause. The original contract was terminated, and a new company was engaged for 34 million baht, with the government retaining a 53-million-baht security deposit from the former contractor. The plan is for the revamped terminal to open for domestic flights in June, eventually facilitating international travel by October. Key installations like the baggage-handling system and airport management software are still pending. The completed Project 1 involved runway improvements, a new taxiway, and electrical systems, costing 678.4 million baht. Meanwhile, Project 3, which includes a runway extension, is 37% complete, while Project 4, focusing on land expropriation for further runway expansion, has advanced to 51%. However, the land acquisition requires an additional 600 million baht beyond its original 868.8-million-baht funding to ensure completion. With substantial investments and significant delays behind them, Trang locals are hopeful that these enhancements will not face further obstacles and that the airport will fully deliver on its long-promised upgrades.
