Refugees are expats? Are you kidding?

Really? Refugees from Cambodia and Laos?

The article stated expats, plus stateless people plus refugees. Just because you're an expat doesn't mean that your stateless or a refugee and I'm only talking about expats. I have no problem eith stateless people and refugees being given citizenship whatsoever.

They have a state (citizenship) whereas these stateless people from disputed border regions do not. Try using more than the "me me me" part of your brain at least once in your life.

I have no problem with stateless people and refugees being given citizenship whatsoever, but that doesn't really apply to expats from Cambodia and Laos, now does it?

The people from Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia are stateless.

What's your state?

Myanmar yes, and some of the northern tribes also yes, but Laos and Cambodia? Also, the article mentions expats, plus refugees, plus stateless people. I'm only talking about expats!

It is somewhat irritating when some friends of mine in the UK have Thai wives and they are granted UK citizenship. However, neither I or friends in Thailand with Thai wives and family are granted similar rights.

That said, I totally agree with the government proposal to do this for the stateless minority.

It's even easier for foreign women to get Thai citizenship as the spouse of a Thai man.

True, I forgot to include that, thanks.

Typical of this chauvinist society.

Let's face it Thailand is a very difficult place to call home. It has only one thing and you have to be on Guard with that.  As I got older Thailand was just more of a PITA than a retirement home.

How does the expat status of people from Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia differ from expats from western countries? Theyrw both expats. Also, I'd say it's safe to say, that expats and retirees from western countries have more expendable income than any of the neighboring Asian countries. They therefore stimulate tue economy quote a bit more per capita...

They are stateless... and contribute to the economy, pay taxes....get it? My friend is Shan/Tai Yai, has lived here 30+ years. She is legally employed, pays into the social security system for healthcare, her child is a Thai citizen. She deserves citizenship.

These will be needed for the low paid labour.

One has to admit that in general, the adult girls from Myanmar, Laos or Cambodia are really hot, great bodies, sweet character and are usually groomed to serve their men well. Much better then most girls in Thailand one bumps into in Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin or Phulet, with obvious exceptions to this as anywhere.

The illegal workers that Thailand needs should be able to get this favor

from the Thai government. Thailand needs them for the labor jobs

that richer Thais will not do. Rich expats that can afford to stay

in Thailand just have to spend a certain amount of money and

be in Thailand a certain amount of time and can get a citizenship, drivers license

and the like. Those that cannot afford it can head back to their home

countries. That was my choice.

The truth?  These are basically illegals here doing work Thai dont want or brought in by Thais for lower wages.

Reason coverup verbally is the decline in their own population :cheesy:

It is even a race issue as an Expat I dont expect or want citizenship it isnt going to stop the discrimination I feel daily and Ive been here 2 decades and it isnt the duel pricing stuff.

But I do feel if you been here like 10 years clean history done all ask in obtaining Your visa for whatever reason thrown a bone so one dont have to jump through hoops, TM30, TM47, IMM-O!

Im not asking for much am I?🤔

You "fee' discrimination daily". Poor sod. Your nerves must be shot to bits. Thailand doesn't owe you or me anything!

One and only ONE reason: their skin and hair colour of "whire "expats. Thailand soes NOT want to be a mixed colour society.

Basically this is a racist policy. Been here 20 yrs and get fast tracked because your from an ASEAN nation. Surely applying for citizenship should be based equally across the board if applicable.

Quiet reminder: Thailand had by August this year mass deported 145,000 Burmese migrants.

You didn't know about this because only Western States are not allowed to do it.

(Here's a source.)

You're not really grasping the difference between someone who came over a year ago and someone who's lived in Thailand "statelessly" for decades. I don't know why you're not grasping it, but you're not; try harder.

Have you applied for Thais citizenship in your 20 years in Thailand ?

How can you be this illiterate?

My point is to express exasperation at the commentators who obsess over just the merest possibility of the West performing mass deportations.

My point and only point was they are completely oblivious to Thailand's everyday use of the function.

Of course I grasp the difference between stateless and immigrants. I feel Thailand has an overwhelming duty to provide citizenship to the stateless born on Thai soil.

when has Thailand every shown compassion.... ever.. they always turn away refugees, some being force back out to sea, never to be heard of again... Thailand only does things if it benefits Thailand's rich.. in this case, cheap subordinate labour.

Thailand is addressing the plight of stateless immigrants from neighbouring countries, with a new policy to grant citizenship to 483,000 such individuals. However, this initiative does not extend to western expats or retirees.

The Ministry of the Interior clarified that this effort is aimed at people from Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia who have lived in Thailand for decades, often statelessly, writes Barry Kanyon for Pattaya Mail.

There had been some confusion, leading expats, particularly retirees from the UK and USA, to inquire about possible benefits for themselves. Some wrongly assumed it related to taxation on overseas income brought into Thailand.

Nonetheless, this policy strictly targets immigrants and ethnic minorities who have long been residing in Thailand without a defined status.

Ms Trisulee Traisanakul, secretary to the interior ministry, stated that most of those eligible are from Myanmar or stateless individuals from disputed border regions.

The objective is to grant them a proper legal status, which in turn should stimulate the economy and allow these groups to work legally.

Thailand is experiencing a demographic challenge with a dropping birth rate and an increasing elderly population. By 2074, the native population could halve to around 30 million.

The policy, therefore, also aims to address this fertility crisis by increasing the working-age population.

The Department of Provincial Administration has undertaken research on these immigrant groups, and the citizenship application process may include self-certification where necessary. Gaining Thai citizenship offers rights such as voting in elections and land ownership.

The citizenship eligibility for westerners generally requires permanent resident status, based on a solid history of legal employment or significant contributions to Thai society.

However, addressing the stateless immigrant issue has been a governmental focus and is now being actively pursued.

Will they still be slaves and second rate citizens??
