Backlash as Popular Sandwich Chain Cancels Franchise Locations

Gotta say I support the Subway home office if they get rid of some Thai franchises that have sorely disappointed me with some awful sandwiches.

Not all of them, by any stretch...

And I suspect some of them are failing to account for royalties and other money they agreed to pay to Subway, by substituting poor quality ingredients to hide the numbers that actually sell.  Some franchises (not necessarily Subway) get fake cups made and have several cash registers, some connected to the network, some rogue.  I've met several QA people from the home offices, traveling in Asia.  They all seem to have the same challenges...

Yup, the ingredients at Subway leave a lot to be desired, or to be thrown in the trash.

My favorite is chicken teriyaki on a wrap (don't like eating all that bread in a 6") with tomatoes, lettuce and sweet onion teriyaki sauce - delivered hot. Always get two chocolate chip cookies. Keep receipt, do online survey, get coupon for two chocolate cookies!

Is there anywhere here we can buy just the cold cuts? My daughter got addicted to eating slices of honey cured smoked ham in the USA on our last visit, not sure where to find good deli-meats here though.

The Americans are good at selling their junk to the world with clever marketing.
But unlike the Japanese they are so far up themselves that they are too stupid to realize things are different in Thailand and you have to train and manage workers differently.

Chevrolet, Baskin Robbins, Carl Jnr, and countless others have came and failed.
TIT.

When you set up a franchise, and have done well with them before, you don't change protocol. What works in many places will work in others. What doesn't work is Thai people adopting other customs as quick as they would think. Thais are accustomed to Thai food, and although they do like McDonalds and KFC, sub sandwiches have not taken as good a hold. Thais have always eaten fried chicken, so KFC was a no brainer. McDonalds has many options, including chicken nuggets, and hamburgers are not the same as a sub sandwich.

It has nothing to do with training or managing workers. You train people the way it's worked from history. It has everything to do with promotion and advertising, and hoping it catches on enough to make a profit. Subway works here in certain areas because they are usually located near foreigners. Put them in Isaan and they'll fail. Thais like farang food but still prefer their own kind, especially spicy.

They would probably like Mexican food as it's often hot and has simple ingredients they use already. If someone made good chorizo and they used ground beef, along with real Mexican seasoning, Thais would eat it. Not talking about Mexican seafood and fajitas but traditional tacos, using beef, pork, chorizo, sausage and fish.

There haven't been countless US franchises that have come here and failed. Thais are generally a poor people, so many cannot afford western food. And farangs aren't in numbers high enough to keep western franchises in business unless you also sell to locals in a higher percentage. Americans are good at selling because they know what Americans like. Easy and quick. Taking out fast food, the US has world class restaurants by the thousands, and their food is as good or better than where they originate. You might want to spend time in the US before you judge them as stupid and so far up themselves, as they are ahead of almost everyone as far as restaurants and food are concerned. Chains try to establish most everywhere because they think a profit might be made. Businesses fail all over because this doesn't happen. Countries where many are poor, as here, are a lot more likely to have chains fail than those with higher pay scales. Greed has companies trying to make do anywhere they think might work.

May all the junk food locations worldwide fail.

Processed food. One of the scourges of ' modern' man.

In full agreement... hopefully JFK will start the food revolution in USA by banning all the crap ingredients then ship it worldwide to follow.

I've wondered that as long as I've lived here, as I love sliced roast beef, turkey, pastrami and ham, as long as it's quality. I've seen some in Lotus, but they didn't look too appetizing. Packaged isn't near as good as fresh sliced, as I'm sure you know. I'm flying back next week, and sub sandwiches from a variety of places is on the bucket list, as is pizza, cheeseburgers and BBQ.

Another option is to buy a Vietnamese ban mi.  Not sure who sells them.

In America at least, there are tons of REAL sandwich shops, so if you need to go to Subway, you must be desperate.

True in a way. I liked Quiznos. Subway was only used if I couldn't find a Quiznos close by. There was quite a few stand alone sub shops in San Antonio and Austin that I frequented. Jersey Mike's was another good one., as is Firehouse Subs. They came from New Jersey and that's a prime location for sub sandwiches. The bread's so much of a sub sandwich, and Subways was a little bland.Thundercloud was another but on par with Subway.

Had one once in Austin, Vietnamese owners and it was pretty good. I'm in Isaan so there's not much close to me. I know Bangkok has quite a few good restaurants but it's a 8 hour drive.

There are many excellent bakeries in Thailand.

I did mean in certain  areas in Thailand , certain locations in Thailand .

Like in Chiang Mai bus station waiting for the bus to Maesai , I'm not going to go down to Pattaya just to get a sandwich .

   Subway is the only option

I haven't been to CM since 2020. I know many expats live there. No decent bakeries?! Business op!
