I agree, when I first came here decades ago many of these types like him would go down to Khao San Road and buy cheap silver jewelry and then fly to Japan. Stay there for a couple weeks selling it on the street to the young Japanese people at huge profits. Then they could flounder around Southeast Asia with the profits for another few months on a shoe string until they would rinse and repeat the same thing again.

I think it's fine to do that when you're in your 20s, but this guy looks to be in his late 40s. He looks like he's running out of time to get his life on track.

Israeli story.

I understand that, but I don't think that's the issue. He said that he has experience working in the casino industry. He also used to build houses he said. So he has some skills and he looks young enough to still be employable. He should be able to find some gig online for work before he heads back. My impression is that he's just lazy and wants to smoke weed and flounder around Southeast Asia eating fried rice.

I still don't understand your obsession with the guy though. I'm sure if you look around closely then you'll meet hundreds of others just like him. He might have drug and alcohol problems too.

“working in the casino industry.“

Fox guards the hen house.

He’s a chronic gambler.  Loses practically everything he earns.

Yeah, he's a troubled case. I'm assuming he has many more vices than he's letting onto. He doesn't speak like a man who is well adjusted.

He spoke about gaming credit cards before. Said he was an expert on living off and manipulating credit card offers.

He also discussed trading securities and crypto. That will wipe you out real fast if you like gambling.

Sounds like he has some skills tweaking numbers and financial stuff, but if he has a gambling addiction that won't do him much good.

Returning to the USA is probably a death sentence if he is on the street. Not just from the weather, it's outright dangerous.

you can get murdered in your sleep on the streets.

I think there's a drug that if someone puts it in your ear, it can kill you.

But if I was on the streets, I would probably want to die anyway.

Even if he's pushing 50 there have got to be suitable jobs available for this fella back in the US.

You need credit, references and job history to rent a place in the USA. You don't just walk in and pay like you do in asia. A bunch of paperwork is submitted and they scrutinize every detail and call to verify.

Without that coveted high credit score you can't get a place even if you could afford it (which he probably can't). If he is complaining about Asia he can't afford to get settled in the USA. He needs a base shelter to apply for jobs (hard to live under a bridge while looking for a job).

I don't think so. I disagree that it could be any of us with some bad luck. He made his life. It doesn't sound like he's had a series of bad luck. More like laziness and bad decisions. Possibly fueled by a drug and alcohol problem.

I disagree,  whilst there are plenty of wasters, who find themselves in difficulties, normally due to their own stupidity,   True "Bad luck" can take many forms and can befall anybody at anytime,  People's lives can be ruined, or  change completely, in a split second, through no  fault of their own.  A little forward planning like a bit of insurance can ease the pain sometimes, but its impossible to cater for every eventuality.

He thinks he's a young guy and can still go back and work a little until to retirement. Looks to be well in to his 40's with no prospects at all. I would say he's royally <deleted> unless he has some major turn of direction.

Fully agree. I caught that comment too where he said he's a young guy and still has time. Like you said, he's probably late 40s. And I would agree that he's royally screwed too and the only major turn will be if he gets off of drugs and stops living like a loser backpacker lost in Southeast Asia.

I get your point, but that's a deeper analysis of "luck", which is more like misfortune and doesn't apply here. My point was that, under normal circumstances, it's very unlikely that many of us would turn out like him in a split second. This guy's problem has been self-inflicted by a grifter lifestyle that has gone on for decades. His situation isn't like being hit by a bus or suddenly having cancer. That's the kind of luck you're referring to where people's lives can be ruined or changed in a split second. All of his bad luck or misfortune or whatever you wanna call it is all based on his bad choices. He also seems to have criminal tendencies.

Although it's fine to discuss and analyze this guy's situation out of curiosity, I think the whole pretensive of this topic is off. This guy doesn't need advice and he doesn't deserve any handouts. He's a grifter, with drug problems, plus he's lazy and potentially has other emotional issues. Nobody is going to give him any sympathy. Guys like him in Southeast Asia are a dime dozen. Go down to some of the islands in the south of Thailand, or to Chiang Mai and you'll find dozens of guys like him floundering and flopping on the cheap. It's been like that since the 80s. Might as well even close this topic as it's not really going anywhere.

This guy made the choice to either knuckle down and work in the USA and build for the future or go and travel around the World and he choose the latter .

Now he is facing the consequences of his choices .

Had he spent the last 20 years working and building houses in the USA , he would probably be thinking about retiring to Asia now  , but he choose gambling , drugs and travel .

He is facing the consequences of his actions

Here, another member of the same loser wannabe grifter club:

Digital nomads. People think they can live off youtube and video views and not really do much work.

Probably the result of seeing relatively few successful channels and ignoring the unsuccessful ones.

I wasn't denying that, I was merely stating that life changing bad luck can affect anybody at anytime,

Right, but that's a given about life. We all know that. So you were just stating the obvious. But as I said, staying on topic, this guy doesn't have that kind of bad luck.

We don't really know that. The gambling and other problems could be a response to misfortune.

Many digital nomads are professionals. They work for a company where they work remotely, thus they can be based anywhere as long as they have a laptop. Many of the real digital nomads are making good livings and they're not on YouTube hitting rock bottom, whining about their troubled existence and looking for handouts. Thailand even has a digital nomad visa now for professionals who wanna live here and are making a good living working online. So I wouldn't describe either of these two guys as digital nomads in any actual sense of the classification.

Also, here's a better description of this grifter type on YouTube that you suggested needs help and signs of what to look out for if you’re trying to identify traveler type YouTube channels with a cringy grifter vibe:

1. Heavy Reliance on Crowdfunding: If a channel repeatedly asks for viewer donations, crowdfunding, or support through Patreon while providing minimal content, it might suggest they’re sustaining their travels primarily through viewers rather than creating value through content.

2. Low-Quality Content with High Frequency: Some creators put out lots of content that lacks substance—like basic vlogs of daily activities without deeper insights about culture, history, or genuine exploration.

3. Sensational Titles and Thumbnails: Titles like “Living in Thailand on $5 a Day!” or “The Real SE Asia Expat Life!” are often used to pull viewers in. If the content doesn’t match the title or is overly sensational, that can be a red flag.

4. Focus on Cheap Living and “Hacks”: A lot of content focused on “how to live here with no money” or constant talk of “beating the system” could indicate an intention to live as cheaply as possible without engaging meaningfully with the location or people.

5. Avoidance of Legitimate Employment: Some YouTubers outright discuss how they avoid getting real jobs, sometimes claiming that they’re just “living the dream” as a “full-time creator” but with no real income source apart from online donations.

6. Legal Gray Areas: If a creator talks about visa runs, overstaying visas, or avoiding taxes, it can sometimes suggest they’re in the country without fully legal or ethical intentions.

7. Live Streams and Super Chats: Some channels rely on live streaming almost exclusively, banking on real-time donations, which may indicate they’re using their travel as a platform for live handouts rather than producing structured content.

And? Every loser has a story and someone else to blame for their own, usually self-inflicted problems.

This guy was a gambler and had a good income prior to that from building houses. He's got first world problems.

There are plenty of locals in Thailand, who are far worse off than he is, and they never had any of the opportunities that he had which he wasted away.

I suggest you stop wasting time trying to gather sympathy for this guy. If you read through all the other posts, besides mine, you'll see basically everyone else seems to agree that he doesn't deserve any sympathy or handouts.

A: Myself, I'm freelance. Just got a new gig.
