Teen Narrowly Escapes Alleged 'Honor Killing' by Parents Outside School

In a harrowing incident outside Timberline High School in Lacey, Washington, a 17-year-old girl was nearly choked to death by her parents in what police are calling an attempted "honor killing." The girl, whose name has not been released, had run away from home to escape an arranged marriage and sought refuge at her school, where her 16-year-old boyfriend also studied.

Her parents, Ihsan Ali, 44, and Zahraa Subhi Mohsin Ali, 40, were arrested on October 18 and charged with attempted murder and attempted kidnapping after the shocking attack. The ordeal unfolded when the girl, malnourished and fearful, arrived at the school during her boyfriend’s first-period class.  

 

 

According to court documents, the girl revealed her father had been threatening her with an honor killing after she refused to marry an older man in another country. She fled her home when her parents attempted to send her on a plane to Iraq. Seeking help, she went to her boyfriend's class, where school officials temporarily sheltered her in a room but reportedly failed to provide secure transportation to a safe location.  

 

As she and her boyfriend waited at a bus stop near the school, her father, who had been waiting in his truck, confronted them. Yelling in Arabic, Ihsan escalated the situation when another student intervened, shouting in Arabic for him to leave the girl alone. Enraged, Ihsan punched the girl’s boyfriend before placing his daughter in a headlock.  

 

According to witnesses and police reports, the girl’s boyfriend and other students intervened when they saw her begin to lose consciousness, her arms flailing before going limp. Victor Barnes, the boyfriend's father, recounted the chilling moments, stating, "My son starts to see her eyes roll back… he tried to save her." With the help of others, the boyfriend subdued Ihsan, repeatedly striking him until he released his grip.  

 

As bystanders restrained Ihsan, Zahraa allegedly joined the attack, attempting to choke her daughter. Students intervened once more, pulling the girl away and preventing further harm. Amid the chaos, the girl’s older sister reportedly attempted to fight off the students, but they successfully separated the mother from her daughter.  

 

Witness Josh Wagner, who stopped his car believing he was witnessing a schoolyard fight, helped restrain Ihsan until police arrived. The girl, visibly shaken, fled into the school with her boyfriend, yelling, "My dad was trying to kill me."  

 

Zahraa reportedly pursued her into the school but was denied entry. The principal eventually placed the school on lockdown to ensure the girl’s safety.  

 

Both parents were arrested at the scene and later appeared in Thurston County Superior Court on November 5. Court records indicate that Ihsan and Zahraa remain in custody on bonds of $100,000 and $200,000, respectively.  

 

This horrifying incident has drawn attention to the dangers some individuals face when they resist cultural or familial expectations. The girl's survival was due in large part to the courage and quick action of her peers and strangers who intervened in her time of need.

This incident should never have happened if the school authorities had provided transport- do they not have a school van?

 

It will be interesting to see if the rest of the family are given a strict telling off, and allowed to remain in the US.

Might sound racist, but I would love to go back to the days of my youth where there were no mass muslims and other ethnics causing chaos in our towns, no asian pedos and black gangs no albanian drug gangs , no honour killings, where it was 99.95% white and christian and no stopping of christian xmas markets due to terrorism. Immigration has downgraded nearly every western country, there is no benefit to western countries that I can see today from immigration of these people. Sad , but true.

Nothing to do with religion. There is nothing that I know of in the Koran to say that sort of thing should happen, but if you can prove there is a Koranic edict I'll take that back.

If it was a religious thing all the other Islamic countries would also have honour killings, but they don't.

 

It's a cultural thing and likely predates Islam.

Well apart from: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestinian Territory, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia. All listed in Wikipedia as countries which tolerate such killings to various degrees. Funnily enough all Islamic countries as well.

The issue with your statement is that it's simply not true, because wherever Islam arrived, honor killing was introduced too. Iran, Somalia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Dagestan, Chechnya, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Indonesia, the Philippines are all countries home to non-Arab Muslim populations who widely accept honor killing.

Overboard Christian zealots are almost as bad. I'm aware of a case in Chiang Mai about 5 years ago where visiting Christian missionaries on holidays from California 'kidnapped' 2 Thai girls and took them about 2 km away and bombarded them with 'jesus will save you stuff but you must give up Buddhism'. 

 

The Thai family (buddhist) very balanced, very happy, good income good education for the kids, were alerted by other foreigners tht the girls had disappeared from a park, parents called the police, the girls were found and the missionaries charged, fined and deported.

My Thai son initially had difficulties with the parents of the Thai lady he was about to marry.
