Most overrated/underrated Actors of all time

Featured Replies

Doesn't necessarily have to be modern. Please clarify whether you rate them or hate them. I have by default included females in the topic title as I believe we must refer to females now as actors, not actresses....

I think we will have some very conflicting responses to this topic.

I'll start with hugely overrated:-

Adam Sandler - about as funny as haemorrhoids - I have honestly never even sniggered at any moment of any movie he has ever been in. Perhaps the American's appreciate him more.

Sean Connery. Worst of all the James Bond actors. A one trick pony. Ruined every movie he has been in including 'The Untouchables'. (waiting for brewsterbudgen to correct me on this one).

I was gonna say exactly this, but there are a few movies from the 80's that were more than acceptable. Highlander, Red October, Untouchables were ok.....

Was gonna go for the obvious like Steven Seagal, but there is some action value in his early days.

Mark Wahlberg? Maybe.... the problem is both me and wife love him in Ted.

How about Will Ferrell?

I forgot about Highlander. One of the equally worst and best movies at the same time. Sean Connery - rubbish, Christopher Lambert - what the feck accent was that? Beatie Edney as Heather - absolutely stunning. If you see her now, you would not believe it's the same woman. She looks like she has eaten two other Beatie Edneys.

No Problem with Mark Wahlberg (the Ted movies are great) and I do, for my sins, find Will Ferrell amusing. The Daddy's Home movies have got the pair of them (no problem) but John Lithgow and Mel Gibson in Daddy's Home 2 and I can't stand either of them.

I did think this topic could be very, very divisive.

Totally agree - another one trick pony, or so I thought until I stumbled across Dark Crimes. Movie set in Poland and quite dark. Totally panned by the critics but the only thing I have watched with him in it that I haven't had to switch off (I would caveat that though by saying Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 0% rating so it must have been really bad).

Two of Most overrated  action heros Steven Seagal and  Sylvester Stallone and there is alot more in the same sjanger, but Sylvester and Steven will do fine for now. Fresh to Mind one of the most underrtated was Donal Sutherland

I thought Seagal never had a rating

Stallone wasn't underrated at all; he gave his support to Trump.  He wasn't really an actor just stuffed him with T and pumped iron before shooting his cheap braindead action movies.

Typical isn't?

I don't really like Jason Statham either in this genre but he seems to knock a new movie out every couple of months so he must be ticking some of the boxes.

Not seen a huge amount of Donald Sutherland films but I did enjoy Citizen X which must have been back in the 90's? About a Russian serial killer.

Jason is not the worst, but I have to admit, I have only seen a few movies with him.

His very, very early movies were the Guy Ritchie gangster flicks. Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels and Snatch. He was a bit wooden in both, but just starting out. Both very entertaining movies if you haven't seen them.

Brad Pitt was in Snatch playing an unintelligible Irish pikey boxer - absolutely fantastic performance.

As an aside, Jason Statham, prior to his acting career, represented England at the 1990 Commonwealth games in 3 diving events. Didn't win a medal though. 555

Robert DeNiro.  He's been in some great films but, like most actors, he just has the right look and the right sound.

To be honest, I don't really rate most actors, for the above reason.  Yes, they can "act", but of course there are millions of people who can too, they just don't have the right look and sound.

Also, Daniel Day-Lewis and Heath Ledger's jokers.  Terrible.

I watched him in Mean Streets last night. Enjoyed the film. I think he has become a bit of a parody of himself over the years. Many people now do a better impression of him than he does himself.

I'm going to watch Deliverance tonight just to see how it has stood the test of time and it's always good to revisit duelling banjos.

Ned Beatty always puts in a good 'shift' but rarely, if ever, the leading light.

Any opinion on Clint Eastwood? I enjoyed the Dirty Harry movies, Unforgiven in the 90's was good and more recently, The Mule.

Something like that 😁

Yeah, I like Clint.  He was good in the cowboy stuff, the army stuff and the slightly more modern stuff (even though he was showing his age).  Obviously a little typecast as the gravelly voiced tough guy (perhaps the first), but he did his job well.

Another very overrated actor, in my opinion, is Marlon Brando.  Perhaps I would think more of him if I were a little older, but I don't see anything special about him at all.  Apparently, towards the end of his career, he was unwilling to get in shape or to learn his lines for films, so he would have them written on cue-cards or fed to him through an earpiece.  He literally just had to turn up and repeat what was being said to him.

Michael Caine and Rodger Moore, neither of them could act, just played themselves

I think this is the case for so many actors who could be considered overrated.

They can technically "act", as in they can read the lines convincingly, show the required emotions and physical actions, but they're basically just them in every movie.

They can become incredibly successful and famous, but it's really just about people liking them. Not that they are particularly good at acting.

I did like Alan Rickman. He was good in pretty much every part he played. I think his voice played a big part in his success. He was typically cast as a Brit villainous type though in most movies. I suppose you stick to what you are good at although chances are, you play that type of role in one movie and you are at the top of the list when a similar role comes along.

The Best on my book 😉

^^^ But far removed from Fleming’s writings. Too slapstick which is not his fault of course. Craig and then Dalton are closest to the real Bond.

I would go with Sandler and Ferrell. Dunno if they can act or not, but both are very annoying.

Dwayne Johnson? Lol

Did someone mention Clint? How dare you! 😜

The bloke can be a bit wooden as an actor but is a legend.

Billy Crudup and Barry Pepper are both underrated I reckon.

Steve Seagal ....... Under Siege 1 & 2 were great.

Sylvester Stallone ..... Rambo, Samaritan, Demolition man all great movies.

Too gay for me!

I always thought that Eli Wallach deserved an Acadamy Award for playing Tuco in the Good the Bad and the Ugly.

Many of the best actors are now sadly forgotten.

Watch Peter Lorre in M and in Casablanca and in The Maltese Falcon

Watch Ernst Thesinger in Bride of Frankenstein

Watch every Colin Clive movie extant.

Watch Basil Rathbone.

Watch Boris Karloff. Watch him in Lost Patrol with Victor McLaughlin (another great)

Watch Lou Costello

Cary Grant

Richard Widmark

Dwight Frye!

I could go on, Im a movie freak. Good movies. Here is one of the greatest movie scenes ever, look Colin Clive AND dwight Frye!

I think this was the original cut, for Theatrical release in 1931, the part about God was edited out I think.

Overrated

Jim Carrey

Vin Diesel

Tom Cruise

Keanu Reeves

Underrated

Cillian Murphy

Edward Norton

Viggo Mortenson

Tom Hanks plays the same role in all his films, plus he starred in Forrest Gump, one of the worst films ever made.

Nicole Kidman, worst actress in the history of acting and not far  behind her in acting ability is Vin Diesel.

Chevy Chase - just not funny

Steve Martin - a lot of his comedy is just a bit too goofy

Adam Sandler- not funny

The following actors are probably not underrated - I just rate them highly

Matt Damon - a great actor - but some of his films were not the best .

Tom Hanks - like a lot of his stuff.

Other actors I rate include Paul Newman , Bruce Willis, Denzel Washington

Keanu is overated because all he does is play the same dazed stoner role he has always played and its great now because he has morphed into a stoned assassin, but its not like he is acting.

How come I havent seen Harvey Keitel named yet?
