These "announcements" with no detail are all about face. "Look at me doing the job I'm supposed to do" or "Geez I haven't done anything for a while so maybe my bosses will start to question me" or "Everybody sees me sitting on my fat arse and doing nothing so I had better whip up a scare story to keep my role and maintain relevance".
