In 2024, Russia's export revenues amounted to $417.2 billion, which is practically no different from the 2023 figure and the average annual value for the ten pre-war years. Russian exports appear to be invulnerable to sanctions. But in reality, this is not the case.

The paradox of Russian export resilience to sanctions is largely determined by the frontal surge in prices for a wide range of goods that form its core – metals, minerals, energy products, food raw materials and fertilizers – in the early 2020s after a period of relatively low prices in the mid-2010s. 

The outbreak of war and the introduction of sanctions only spurred an abnormal rise in prices for some of them, which more than compensated for the reduction in supply volumes and additional costs.

However, the commodity price boom of the early 2020s is now gradually fading. Costs and limited sales markets, which seemed less significant when prices were high, are becoming increasingly important factors for competition.

While prices are still above the levels of the second half of the 2010s, supply and competition are growing, creating conditions for the displacement of "toxic" Russian products, burdened with additional sanction costs. Russian coal exports are already in crisis, and metal exports are declining. Conditions for a surplus have formed on the oil market. The European energy market will be ready to completely abandon Russian raw materials in two to three years.

The main threat to the Russian economy today is not even a sharp decline in oil prices, which seems unlikely, but a smooth but frontal decline in prices and, accordingly, in income from most items of Russian exports.

Such a decline may be all the more sensitive since the transfer of the Russian economy to “war footing” has paradoxically led not to a lesser, but to a greater dependence on imports.

Mm… Russia’s inflation rate has fallen from about 18% 3 yrs ago to single digit today. Seems they’re managing well despite a rising GDP.Oil and gas revenues have returned to pre-conflict levels so lots of income coming in. Depreciation of the rouble has also helped exports.

Rouble significantly strengthened in the last weeks to the level that started to be inconvenient for exporters ( why I do not see these news from local regular posters, why?? 😅). However this level should put inflation down and make abroad travelling and imported goods more available to people.

90% of medicines and 85% of medical equipment is imported. Russia has been unable to identify domestic suppliers.

9% inflation is not too bad. Eggs in America are now considered a luxury item. My daughters in the UK tells me that prices have risen so much that they are even thinking of relocating to Asia. I also heard that prices of electricity have doubled in some Baltic states. My local khao soi shop has increased their price by almost 15%.

I watched the movie "Ronald Reagan" last weekend on my plane flight.  Being of age I joined the US Air Force during the Reagan era and also lived in California so I kind of liked the movie for some of its early history.  I didn't think it was a particularly good movie, but I mention it here because Reagan was so convinced he and the USA with his policies could break the soviet union.  Did he succeed?  Well during his time in office, there were obviously many things that changed.  The USA debt did tripe during his presidency.  Yes the Soviet Union broke up, more or less.  In the movie Reagan said the USA has deeper pockets than the soviets... Well, maybe true but was it worth tripling the USA debt?

It honestly hurts to realize that people are so blinded by their fanaticism that they refuse to believe that Ukraine, as it existed before February 24th – with Crimea included – will no longer exist!
And this, despite the graphs, statistics, and other numbers that some display to make people believe that Russia is a poor country.
I am neither Russian nor Ukrainian, just a simple observer who – I hope – is objective!
