Cramming College

My 17 year old granddaughter wants to study medicine at university. However, she just fails. marginally. to make the grades required. She is almost a year too young for her year at school so has time on her side. Are their any colleges in the Chiangmai area where she may study intensively to bring her up to the standard asked?

She needs to do something like A levels or IB.  In London we have a pre year offered before starting your medical degree. At 17 they would start A levels. What education does she have now.

Speaking from experience I taught at the largest A levels college ''Christ the King'' in the United Kingdom. Many of my students went on to King's college University for medicine.

The other option if she (or you) can afford it, might be to get a private teacher for extra lessons in the subjects she is weak in.

What is her ability level in the sciences?  I have a few students who had trouble with that, and they found a school that could help them and tutor them.

That is the best way.  What does she want to study in medicine? There are various levels, ie being a nurse is not as strenuous as being a doctor.

For God's sake, don't give up on her!  She is trying to get into a respectable field, kudos to her, and you as a parent for supporting her.

To be quite honest I think you are going to end up disappointed.

My neice had excellent results but not good enough for medicine, everyone wants to be a doctor. Forgotten how many uni places she was offered ranging from veterinary to chemical engineering.

She had her heart set on medicine so applied in China and was accepted on an English speaking course at Sun Yat Sen uni. A difficult route and took about 8 years to get Thai licence, lost a year due to covid. Started off doing agency work but now delivering babies at a government hospital. In June will start another 3 year course on Obs & Gyny at hospital in Bangkok.

A really difficult profession and your granddaughter needs to give it serious consideration.

And important is that if she for whatever reason doesn't make the grade - that is OK too. There are some things we ain't cut out to be and there are plenty of other great opportunities for anyone who is even capable of considering medicine.

She will need your ongoing and commendable support even more if she isn't accepted.

I think at 17;she is much too young. Has she studied and passed all her exams that will enable her to enter med school or training. I doubt that very much.

I agree but she is impatient. I have suggested she tries to take a gap year working in a hospital before applying again, But a 17 year old does listen to an old grandpa.

if she failed the tests, there is a reason

she can still become an astronaut, lawyer, scientist or policeman
