Nighttime frequency also is related to BPH

True, as the OP does not mention it. I have BPH, and sometime can get up for one 3 times in the night, only 2 hours apart, even though I have not drunk any further liquid. I sometimes wonder where it all comes from. But, of course, urine is also a by-product of what you have eaten, digested and extracted the goodness out of it, and then you get rid of the poison and suchlike. Pooh on the other hand is what your body cannot digest or need.

Nighttime urination (Nocturia): Waking up more than once a night to urinate may suggest fluid retention, heart issues, or sleep apnea.

Or an enlarged prostate.

Only 2-3 times a day, because I hold it up as flushing the toilet cost money, but it's pale yellow.

Over the years there have been different scenarios.

If it's yellow - let it mellow.

If it's brown, flush it down.

Saves a lot of water (and money).

The same for me. Sometimes it's every two hours. Annoying at times.

for me depends on the time of year

Summertime maybe go all night without a pee, it is now winter = 2 or 3 times a night + day time winter around every 2 hours, Summertime around 2 or 3 times a day

Drink around the same everyday for years - 3 black coffees then plain water 3 + liters per day

As a PS - Never use Air Con

My prostate size is ‘normal’ at about 45 ml.

I pee every 2 to 3 hours during the day, but at about 50% full bore - I put the reduced flow down to old age and it’s not a problem.

Different story at night, I pee every 1.5 to 2 hours, and at like 10% full bore.

Having to get up every 1.5 to 2 hours is tiring and tedious but I think it fits in with sleep cycles.

The increased frequency and reduced flow at night is a mystery as I struggle to get a decent flow – more like a series of squirts.

Too many times, though much better that 6 - 12 months ago.  I do drink a lot of water, and prostate is a bit enlarged.

Have noticed, my change in diet seems to have help a bit.  Again, Keto ish & very low carbs/sugar.  Only real change.

Think main difference is Magnesium supplement, and since taking, no longer wake up to P at night after falling asleep.   A major change, along with, seem to have a lot more volume, and P less times a day, or urge to.

Kind of gives me the feeling, the prostate may have shrunk back a bit.  All pluses compared to about a year ago, and all blood work good, and better than a year or so ago.

Seem to have gotten healthy the past 2 ish years, and possibly simply because paying attention to diet more.   In which case, way too easy. as little to no real effort involve.

can you please let me know what brand of magnesium you take or a photo of the bottle. thanks

Purchased from iHerb.  Also available on LAZ, but like ordering from iHerb, so no fakes, hopefully.  Citrate version of the three types, is easiest digested, least expensive, though some folks have  problem with diarrheic, which may be a plus, for those suffering from constipation.  Myself, didn't notice anything in that area.

It really helps you sleep, or did for me.  Sleep straight through, 6 - 8 hrs, now, when before, was more like 6 hrs or less, with waking to P, halfway through.

I take with last meal/dinner, 5 ish PM.

My prostate size is 47 (at my age 40ml is a normal size) I'm on Avodart and Harnal Ocas. I had a bit low flow late nights. I have no other urinate problems and I drink water about 5L a day, once I go pee before bed time, about 2:00 or 3:00 and again 5 to 6AM I guess due to drinking water and medications.  I had to stop caffeine and beer (one bottle everyday), I quit. Added tomatoes (cooked) to my all foods. Fish oil capsules and salmon.

It largely depends on how hydrated you stay throughout the day, the amount of water and other non-diuretic liquids (coffee, tea, etc) one drinks. Therefore, frequency alone, I've never seen as indicative of anything specific.

Rather amount, not just a couple of dribbles when you feel the need to pee, and similarly a healthy, strong stream-flow, are indicative of good urinary health without prostate hyperplasia or other conditions which might cause blockage.

Regardless, a PSA test or other supporting tests, to verify prostate health, particularly after a certain age, are key.

Most men will have a pee problem as they get older due to the enlarged prostate . There are several procedures that can alleviate or stop the problem . However some can interfere with your love life . Rezume and the Euro lift are 2 minor procedures that will not effect your love life but they are not cheap , even in Thailand . However , I read in a BBC medical journal that UK doctors recommend that men over the age of 50 years old should take a daily dose of Viagra , as this has the effect of easing the prostate size and thus makes for easier urination .In Thailand the generic form of Viagra is commonly available and goes by the name of Sideagra . It has the same content ( Sildenafil ) as Viagra at a much cheaper price . Myself and a few friends take it every evening which results in a much stronger stream . Plus it has the bonus of giving stronger erections . I normally buy 100 mg and cut them in half with a pill cutter . Sideagra is about 110 bat for 4 pills of 50 mg or 200 baht for 100 mg

8+ times a day - pale yellow, well hydrated. I am 80 years old.

But I do drink a lot (no alcohol) of caffeinated sugar free energy drinks and coffee.

I am also diabetic and have an enlarged prostate gland (currently taking medication)

8-9 times a day. I do have CKD, BPH and Urgency issues if i stand up after sitting or laying down for some time. Overnight - go around midnight and usually one other time. In the morning usually go 2-3 times within 2 hours, after that OK.

I take Duodart and it does help provide a better flowrate. Hopefully also shrinks the Prostate, but no proof of that yet. Since CKD diagnosed, have upped my liquid intake slightly, and Urine colour nearly always clear to pale yellow.

The number of times a person urinates each day varies depending on several factors, including fluid intake, activity level, and overall health. On average:

  • Normal frequency: Most people urinate 6-8 times a day. This is considered typical for someone with normal fluid intake and a healthy bladder.
  • More frequent urination (8+ times a day): This could indicate:
    • High fluid intake, especially caffeinated or diuretic drinks.
    • Overactive bladder or bladder irritation.
    • Pregnancy (due to increased blood flow and pressure on the bladder).
    • Medical conditions like urinary tract infections (UTIs), diabetes, or interstitial cystitis.
  • Less frequent urination (fewer than 4 times a day): This may be due to:
    • Dehydration or low fluid intake.
    • Kidney issues or urinary retention.

What Your Pee Frequency Might Indicate About Your Health

  1. Color:
    • Pale yellow indicates good hydration.
    • Dark yellow or amber suggests dehydration.
    • Pink or red could indicate blood in the urine and requires medical attention.
  2. Urgency: Sudden, strong urges to pee could suggest an overactive bladder or a UTI.
  3. Pain or Discomfort: Burning or pain may signal a UTI, kidney stones, or irritation.
  4. Nighttime urination (Nocturia): Waking up more than once a night to urinate may suggest fluid retention, heart issues, or sleep apnea.

If your urination patterns change suddenly or become concerning, consult a healthcare professional for evaluation.

It always depends on the weather or how cold it is

Green could mean you are a Martian.

I hope non of you have any pre-existing heart conditions. Must be careful taking those pills.

My research suggests that a 'normal' prostate size is 25ml, so it's more likely that yours, at 45ml is 'normal for your age', just like mine.

And my symptoms are very much like yours as well. At first I was prescribed Doxazosin which worked very well for about 2 years and then the effectiveness gradually reduced and I didn't like the side effect which was edema. (Swelling of the feet and ankles)  As a keen walker that was very unwelcome.

I value sleep a lot and the night time trips to the bathroom were equally unwelcome and so I decided to quit the medication and try using a single use catheter instead.

I now use one last thing at night, just before lights out to ensure that my bladder is completely empty and I also practice intermittent fasting so no food or drink, especially alcohol after 6pm.

Now I usually get up to 4 hours sleep before I need a pee and generally I only need to go once in the night. Oh what bliss!

It's a simple and inexpensive solution and it works! Give it some thought
