Expat Tom Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago If you walk down Beach Road in Pattaya you can see an almost daily even in front of the Thai police station by Central Festival. The police are hard at work stopping every motorbike driven by a farang while stopping no bikes driven by Thai's. So, we know that the police here are good at targeted enforcement. They attack farang with official uniforms, the rule of law and ticket books. The only difference between this daily mugging by the police and the poor 80 year old bleeding from knife wounds is the knives. The mugging has the same effect. Farang are relived of their cash. Don't believe me? Take a walk on the beach and see for yourself. Many Thai people and a majority of the police see farang as "Walking ATM's" Welcome to the Land of Smiles. 1

That doesn't sound wise for an 80 year old. Truth is if he had taken a taxi or Grab home from his Xmas party we wouldn't be having this discussion now. 😆 You should be damned well ashamed of yourself - the emoji is disgusting considering the subject matter! Pattaya has its shady side granted but it is also a tourist city. If tourists can't walk around safely, having had a drink or otherwise, then the city is lost. It it wants to keep its tourist status then the police have to get out there and make it safe. I urge everybody to repost the video of the attack in as many places as possible - there is nothing that jolts the Thai authorities into action more than bad publicity. 1 4

But who walks around those quiet areas or beach areas at midnight anyway, it's trash there always with junkies and stuff. I would find out who did that to me and make sure they get a lot, repeated, violence, themself. I'd spend a million baht on it even. I was waiting for the first post to say it was his fault for walking home. Congratulations! 1 5

Or maybe he might have had a motorbike crash or car crash. We know how safe Thai roads are. it should be safe to walk home minding your own business at midnight. The discussion should be on how to make it safe and the first step is catching these particular 6 thugs. 1 1

smew Posted 12 hours ago Posted 12 hours ago Family friendly environment such as that will attract only more people of the same characteristics as the bike gang.
Popular Post spidermike007 Posted 12 hours ago Popular Post Posted 12 hours ago Fortunately attacks on foreigners like this are still fairly rare, though this does sound like a pretty horrible incident. Six young guys attacking an 80 year old man is about as deplorable as it gets. We don't know whether or not the police will take any action, but one thing we do know is that Pattaya continues to go downhill, continues to become a lesser version of itself, and continues to become more violent and crime riddled as time goes on. I'm hopeful that I never have to return to that rather forlorn spot. 1 2

shackleton Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago This is the type of news that does tarnish Pattaya,s reputation as a safe World class tourist destination 😱 1
ChipButty Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago Silly old bugger walking home at that time of the night, I'm not saying he deserves it, but eliminate any possibility, why does he need 7000 baht on him? 1 2 4

Could it be that Pattaya is becoming the wrong part of Westernization? Where the kids that drop out of school suddenly fine out they have o education or skills and turn to gangs and robbery. 1

Popular Post Scouse123 Posted 11 hours ago Popular Post Posted 11 hours ago Drum roll....... Let's wait for the ' I've been here 30 years, and it's never happened to me brigade ' to start saying he must have asked for it, as he was walking home late, or Thais never do this kind of thing, or he must have said something to them. Oh, that's right, it's already started further up the thread by idiots on here that can't and won't accept any alternative vision other than theirs looking through their rose-tinted glasses. The feral youth of Thailand in the 2020s are a different breed to those in the 90s and 2000s, and that's all there is to it. 3
jimgilly Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago There is something seriously wrong with many of these locals and all you need to do is watch the news for a week or two. They can be overly aggressive and it doesn't take much to set them off. Young and old often don't respect others including family, fear the law or the repercussions of their actions. Add the fact the roads are death traps and it changes the Land of Smiles to something less pleasant very quickly. IMHO, this is not somewhere you want to be if the economy takes a downturn as crime and violence could make this a very unsafe place to visit or call home, Time to seriously think of other options and do it sooner rather than later. 2

So six Thai teenagers out of some 34 million Thai men were involved and it made the Thai press. If it were an elderly Thai it would still have made the Thai press but we may not even hear about it. What about if it were an alien from Mars. Would that make the news. The problem with whataboutery is that it is merely speculation and not facts. 1 1

Maybe one gang gets away with a successful grab, others follow. In my years here I've never once felt threatened but that doesn't mean it can't still happen, being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Many moons ago (maybe 2003?) when staying in Pattaya several girls warned me to avoid those quiet sois that connect off Beach Rd "the boy hit your head!" I was hearing this several times a week, I figured there must be something to it. No great detour in avoiding them. 1
