He's lucky to be alive.

Yes, I saw in the video that one of the robbers was equipped with a machete or sword and not afraid to use it on the poor man. A hard slash from that at the right place severing a main artery can be fatal.  That robber if caught should be handed a stiff sentence indeed.

  • What a horrible thing to attack an 80 year old man. They were 6 of them and could have easily just taken his money and vanished. What was the need to beat him up so savagely? I hope all of them are ca

The neighborhood is so quiet, anything can happen. But what can the cops do, probably just give them a warning since these are kids

But, but, but, :-  "Authorities are committed to apprehending the culprits and bringing them to justice in accordance with the law."

Maybe that comment has been copied and pasted as I have just done!

Police had better come up fast with solving this unfortunate violent robbery where machete or sword are involved . Nip such crime on the bud before other copycat robberies. Going soft on this type of crime will definitely affect the perception of expats as well as tourists on personal safety in pattaya.

But is it not a "Famiy Friendly Resort"?

No more so than other popular resorts with loads of bars!

The answer is, no they don't.

The majority of Thai mwn don't do that.

A very small minority of Thai's do, and that is usually blown way out of proportion by the press and the social media.

Are you crazy! It's always happened. Did you see the size of that so called knife not! It was a sword! Thailand is very dangerous.  An innocent person can easily be set apon by a pack of rabit thai men-boys, and beaten, stabed or shot. Why? Because they are jealous, see a slight, bord, drunk, and or robbery.

From TAT to all foreign tourists and residents  - "We wish you a Merry Christmas, we wish you a Merry Christmas ---etc, etc, etc,!

Three motorbikes six thai's tooled up attack and rob 80 year old man and not a lone incident lately, well I hope these brave young thai's get caught and are made an example of before it becomes a game changing scenario for Pattaya and Thailand.

Attacked by a baby gang ? Very well, so thanks to that wicked law that limits parents and maybe the teachers too, in their educational , practice  episodes like this will be more and more frequent in the future. Congratulation Thailand

Out for an intoxicated walk at Midnight?

Am I reading this correctly?

Hmmm.

That doesn't sound wise for an 80 year old.

Truth is if he had taken a taxi or Grab home from his Xmas party we wouldn't be having this discussion now. 😆

Do you always blame the victim?

I don't think anyone is blaming the victim.  Rather, they are questioning his choice, at his advanced age, to be out by himself at midnight in an area apparently without many people around.  I would not do that anywhere in the World, and that includes Pattaya and the small city where I lived in the US.

Someone will be along, I'm sure, to say that people should be able to walk around alone at midnight and be perfectly safe.  Yes, they should.  In a perfect World.  Which this is not.  And, since it's not, a prudent person acts accordingly.

the 80 year old must have done something to warrant such an attack....

Possibly, but I very much doubt it.

Probably wasn't the smartest move carrying around 7,000 baht drunk late at night at that age.

Not at all. It was a robbery, it wasn’t for no reason.

It's very sad ,but we must think of the poor Thai youths who don't have the same opportunity as kids in Western countries

Rather than punishment they should receive love and guidance

Absolutely correct

He should only be out between 9am & 5pm

I haven't been to Pattaya for more than 10 years, and I doubt that I will ever go again.

There's no need for prejudices against a city

Let's go back 12 years to an Isaan town where a innocent young Aussie guy was murdered by a group of youths who received 3 years sentence

Swords are hard to find in Thailand, though machetes are easy.

We have 2 or 3 around the place.

Can you please quote a figure or a percentage backed up by a link of how many Thai men actually do pick on farangs.

There are so many posts all saying one thing or another but nobody has given a figure that is or can be verified,

The original post was that 6 guys on 3 motorbikes attacked the Belgian. A later post says that the police arrested 4 youths but nothing about the other 2 guys.

So were there only 4 guys or 6.

'Probably' - highlights your bias long with the earlier comment that these guys don't look Thai...

And... the thugs had no idea how much he was carrying until after they mugged him...  So the amount he was carrying has very little relevance to the actual attack...   he would have been attacked if he had no cash.

You also try and victim blame and imply he was drunk...   there is no mention of that...

I'm wondering if they saw him withdraw from a ATM?

Or they saw in his wallet when he was in a 711 or something?

I mean it's a gamble on their part to pick him , imagine picking farangs around the NIRUN or FLYBIRD rooms in Pattaya ! All would lucky to have 10 baht

Why would they be jealous? What is a rabbit Thai man?

An 80 year old man should not be going around Pattaya by himself, especially if he needs a nurse to care for him.

Indeed. Where was his nurse, maybe an inside job?

There's no need to discriminate on the man's age please !!

Thailand has always been dangerous , i was attacked in Soi Khaotalo by robbers in 2002  , unfortunately for them  I  has been shopping and had a hammer , several thais also came to my aid , by the time the BIB arrived the 2 scumbags needed urgent hospital treatment  after which they got 6 years each in Monkey house .

Another time in 2009   I was at a petrol station the esso near pattaya Tai on Sukumvit after picking my then 9 year old daughter up from Thaewanko when  4 teenage <deleted>bags  on scooters stormed in knocked me off my scooter , grabbed my wallet and phone  and  were hitting the 2 girl attendants to steal the cash ,,  but my little daughter was already a blackbelt and using he motorcycle helmet as a club  bashed and knocked out 2 of the  robbers , i got up and put another in a choke hold , the 4th ran off  and then the cops arrived .. All 4 ended up getting 10 years  , we were present in court  and the cops made it known in the jail that a 9 year old girl had knocked 2 of the <deleted> out so big loss of face for them ha ha

I have also been attempted robbery at knifepoint in my house in Soi Khaotalo back in 2016   did not end well for the robber  ,, . But attacking an elderly 80 year old  is a new low.. I hope the cops  catch and punish them  hard . other wise  they will grow .

Possible...  However, he was also in front of his moo-baan, so I'd assume he was on his way home and there's no need for cash at that time of night - is there even an ATM nearby in that area (within walking distance ?).

So, no, while remains an assumption, I don't think he will have been spotted using an ATM..  I think this is purely an opportunistic and random mugging...  but, more than a mugging, it was a horrific attack that could have very easily killed him.

The issue with this is the potential for the 'contagion effect' where other youths see this and get a similar idea, to attack a foreigner, its a quick route to 7000 baht.

when they catch those <deleted>  they should be  tied to trees covered in  cooking oil and left out all day  in the sun  , and then castrated ...
