Holy Rigatoni! Is "authentic" Italian food actually American?

Featured Replies

Actually, pizza is not really an Italian historical dish, as tomatoes have been introduced relatively recently. It appeared only in the 18h-19th century, after the diffusion of tomatoes in Italy.

The real historical dish is Foccacia, already popular among Romans, under the name "Foccacius".

  • That was silly.   Kind of like Taco Bell's attempt to do the Mexico market.

  • The best pizza I’ve ever had was an American pizza, same with other “Italian” food.

Along with peppers. So if you like peppers on your pizza, or tomato sauce (or pineapple), your Italian pizza is American in origin.

The classic Neapolitan pizza uses a simple tomato sauce made from fresh tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, and basil—quintessentially Italian. However, the way tomato sauce is used and seasoned in American pizzas (sweeter and more robustly spiced) often differs from the lighter, purer Italian style.

You can't generalize about American pizzas.

The classic Neopolitan pizza is quintessentially Neopolitan.
