Is it any different to an android box that you could have bought in Thailand?

Sorry for some reason my post uploaded with half the text missing so I'll start again;

Ordered an Android Media Box from Amazon UK which price included all fees for custom clearance and was shipped via DHL International. Got an email yesterday from DHL UK stating shipment had departed UK and on its way to Thailand. Today I get this email from DHL Thailand stating that customs have impounded the item as the shipping invoice has a HTS code for which a broadcast and transmission equipment import license is required from the NTBC of Thailand. Contacted DHL and explained to them that Amazon website stated goods were eligible for delivery in Thailand and that the item is just a set top box for personal use and does not transmit or broadcast any signal, I then sent them the specifications to prove this point. Their response was I need to contact NTBC and either get a waiver letter or obtain the said license otherwise the goods will be destroyed.

Has anybody else had issues like this and were you able to resolve them?

I once ordered an ear thermometer which required a medical import license before they would deliver it.

They have stolen your item and you will never get it.

It's not a DHL issue - it's a customs issue.

Bought a Kindle from Hong Kong via Lazada, arrived at my home by DHL 4 days later. Problem is the Thai government hates the USA but bows to China.

It seems in some cases you can let them send it back to the sender and you should get a refund.

But I am pretty sure that is not a general rule.

Could be some cheap stuff in Thailand in the future, if Trump puts tariffs on Thailand.  :smile:

So I contacted NBTC about this license issue and it transpires that if you travel out of Thailand you can legally bring back devices such as a mobile phone, tablet, laptop and set top boxes etc. But if you're in Thailand and you buy online from a source outside of Thailand then you must have a commercial license (issued at quite a cost and a lot of paperwork and time) from NBTC otherwise any device that has the ability send or receive analogue, digital or optical signals will be seized by customs. To obtain such license you must have a Thai registered company and work permit with appropriate permissions to trade in such goods.
The upside is that I contacted Amazon and after explaining the situation they confirmed the money paid will be credited back in full.
It's no wonder companies find it a nightmare trying to do business here with all the red tape and bureaucracy.

Interesting set of events.

Good it turned out OK. But not without some frustration; I'm sure.

I had an issue with the delivery of a mouse; special gaming one. It was sent from China. The delivery was not one of Lazada's lads. Ordered it on the 3th=rd December. A week ago it reported that it had been delivered. I wasn't that fussed as it was COD. It arrived last Saturday.
