My friend wants to stay in an artsy area of bangkok. Is there such an option?

I cant think of any options for an artsy / cool area of Bkk. Can you recommend any options?

 

I can only think of that tourist road at the end of khao san road on the opposite side. Nice feel to that street that has a temple beside it. But full of backpacker types. whats the name f that road?

 

Please give me some recommendations.

Chinatown near the river has become very artsy with lots of galleries, street art and cool trendy bars and cafes. Goldie's gallery is there too: https://aurum.gallery/     However I wouldn't want to live around there at all.

Ari is probably a good bet. Definitely artsy and trendy, art galleries, cafes, trendy little bars, but still central and on the skytrain line.

The area to the West of HuaLampong station but before Yaowarat has also gone arty-farty.  This translates as being more expensive for the privalage of sitting near rich Thai / Chinese offspring of now wealthy parents. The Mustang Blue cafe is an example. Beautiful colonial architecture but toffy nosed staff.

yea, would be my suggestion, also very touristy, there simply insn't an arts scene here similar to what you'd find in other countries. more's the pity.

In general, I saw some websites from so called boutique hotels which somehow think they are something special. And maybe they are special. I would guess there is a high chance that artsy people stay in such places. Maybe that is a start.

Also an area over by Chula and Victory monument.

 

Like Jazz, Bang Rak & north of, and NW area of the island.  Other areas on the island and pretty cool also.

 

Much has changed though since covid, I would think, as haven't been in a while.

Little late to this but the most "Artsy" Thai area I know in Bangkok is a neighborhood off Lad Phrow-92 called "Town in Town".  I used to work in TV commercials and TV in Bangkok and most of the casting studios, production studios, sound studios and editing shops are in that area.  It's mostly townhouses spread over 3 or 4 sq./km.   Lot's of dance and music cafe's and small restaurants.  Downside is very little nearby public transportation.

Interesting. I also work in that industry and spent many many years in that area but left maybe eight years ago to set up a new company which I built on Sukhumvit. I was so happy to leave that area as - like you say - there's no public transport and the traffic on the only road in and out from Sukhumvit (Ekkamai-Ramintra) is horrendous at rush hours. I worked around there from 1998 to 2017. I was back there for a meeting a few months ago and found it quite run down in T-i-T itself. Still some decent bars and restaurants around the area though but I wouldn't ever consider living there.

Ari to Chatuchak is hipster and cool. It is home to the most hip coffee places and the area around Chatuchak is also a historical neighborhood for woodworking. Soi Ari is definitely worth checking out, but it is very thai with an international touch, not many foreigners.

 

Phra Athit Road near Kao San Road and that entire area is not only tourism, it is also very artsy because of the nearby Thammasat University, which is the liberal progressive university in Bangkok.
