I prefer to post on informational-type threads or obscure cultural references like in a Gamma Globual thread, but I am also happy to make fun of passive aggressive retards; if I have a good insult to toss in, and if they're really, really retarded.

 

I also am brit-ophile, in terms of forgotten bands there. Given the ancient demographic here, you could toss up a thread about The Shadows or Matt Monroe and get a dozen witty posts and some quality Youtube links.

 

Otherwise, I enjoy the sense of community here. I have my faves. I was eating in a fake Jewish Deli with one of them today.

That brings me onto a secondary question after I started this topic, guys bantering as much as we do (me not so much as am low on the post front) how many guys have met up with their friendly virtual adversaries on TV or AN in the past 🙂 

I think if you can have a reasonable banter with someone virtually and it doesn't get too personal then those people would probably make quite good acquaintances in the 'real world'

Oddly, Lefties never threaten to fight. We're sticking with the Make Love, Not War theme that got us laid back in the day.

I think with Trumps new immigration policies it will decrease the available of resources to "Make Love and Not War" for lefties and righties alike to get a bit of relief for a night - coming to the UK from France they just have better Dinghy's and less military on the border so a possible reason for a UK migration but wouldn't do it until a sensible party is in power 🤪

I started looking at this forum when I was first looking into Thailand Visa issues.  It was a lot of help back then and I managed to finally walk out of Jomtien Immigration with a Retirement Extension Of Stay without too much trouble.  That was in 2006 and although I had the Affidavit of Income I obtained at the US Embassy, the Immigration officer at Jomtien also wanted a "bank letter."  So I had to leave and go do that.  Other than that, it went smoothly.

 

More recently, I just pay an agent and save myself the trouble,

 

As for whether the forum is "addictive"?  Not particularly.  Social media in general can be somewhat addictive, though.  I guess I post here just because I come here to look at the local news and I'm already here and I have yet to be banned.  I think one of my posts got deleted once by a moderator because I didn't support my post with a link to a "acceptable" source, as if that would guarantee some. sort of truth. Anyway, that's OK.  A month or so later it all turned out exactly as I said it would.  I make some effort not to post nonsense, but whatever.  

 

A few years ago, I got in the habit of posting on Reddit, but that place seems to be run by a bunch of left wing psychopaths who can't handle the truth. The forum moderators only seemed to like people who agreed with the party line 100%. I found myself banned from about 80% of the forums after a few posts.  It was almost fun.  How quickly can I get myself banned?  

 

I finally. just deleted my account.   Let the people blab away in their left wing echo chamber.

It’s a very useful, valuable and helpful forum, for advice; support ; guidance; sometimes educational :

 

It’s nice to be able to consult others who may have had previous experience in an area that you are about to encounter.  Especially in a Country like Thailand where things change overnight and regulations and laws are not enforced; or there may be different practices in different regions/ districts.

 

Some people are helpful and positive, others can be funny, while some can be rude, offensive.  Many whinge a lot, which is why I tend to avoid Ex Pats forums. I found the same in the Middle East. People choose to migrate then spend the rest of their life whingeing about the locals. They all seem to believe that the West is superior, a Colonial mentality, since the accurate history is not taught in the the West.

 

Interesting however to have just read  from Medical research that Social Media (and Forums)  is the major source of “ Irritability “ in Older People.

So best to keep tuned and try to be helpful when you can is my motto, but take some stuff with a pinch of salt!

 

But full credit to the hard- working and thoughtful people who have set this up and operate it.  Regularly monitoring and improving such a free and valuable service, IMHO.

Unfortunately it is nowhere near as good as it was. There were previously many very knowledgeable posters and it was possible to obtain advice and information on a wide range of subjects.

 

Nowadays, if you post anything requiring specific information, it is usually ignored or several posts about Pattaya's Soi 6 appear.

 

Many of the posters with even a moderate degree of sophistication, education and knowledge of Thailand other than bars and hookers have moved on.

I don't know about "addictive," but AN doesn't seem to be as timely as it used to be, with the lag between news events and an official topic appearing on AN now seeming to be longer than it used to be. More and more I go to Twitter/X for world and Thai news, although I've never actually posted anything there, and I've had a Twitter/X account for 12 years. Instead of posting, I'm satisfied with giving a "like" on X.

Before Thaiger invaded, ThaiVisa was a congenial place to share ideas and ask for helpful info on questions about living in Thailand. Since the invasion, it's basically turned into a political sh!tbox. Far too many lonely, angry alcoholics looking for any reason to stir things up.

 

Is it an addiction? Personally it's a way to stave off boredom between tasks on my pc. I used to enjoy it. Now it's a drudgery. Unfortunately until a better forum comes along, it's the best place to find info for being in Thailand.

AN formerly ThaiVisa has been hugely helpful to me in the past and also currently.

I haven't used it for a few years with living in different parts of the world but more recently it is has become a community to turn to especially after moving way out into the sticks.

I still maintain a place in the city and am back there in a couple of weeks so there will probably be peace from my posts!

@ moderator huge respect to you guys and the community in general.

I have lived away from my home country a couple of decades nearly and having something like this where you can discuss things with like minded people and get advice even if it is harsh sometimes is a winner!

AN-forums are extremely helpful in reply to questions and fgeneral knowledge about Thailand. Furthermore, the news-secrion keeps one updated with what happens when you stay/live in Thailand, some of the items are very important knowledge for expats.
