Bangkok officials have issued a warning about PM2.5 dust levels, which are set to reach dangerous levels from February 6 to 9. The average level reached 41.6 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) yesterday—higher than the safe standard of 37.5 µg/m³ and affecting 36 districts.

 

From February 6 to 9, dust levels will surpass acceptable standards and could impact health, according to the Pollution Control Department. Fortunately, levels should drop to moderate from February 10 to 11.

 

 

Residents are urged to wear masks outdoors and limit outdoor activities. Open burning is discouraged, and the public should report smoke-emitting vehicles using the Traffy Fondue platform or hotline 199.

 

Air quality updates are available through the AirBKK app, www.airbkk.com, Bangkok Environmental Office’s Facebook, and the LINE ALERT service.

Well, they could push the safe standard back above 50 µg/m³, then viola....no more dangerous levels.

"Open burning is discouraged" 

For reasons of understanding the seriousness, I like the word 'discouraged' instead of for instance 'prohibited' , or even better, 'Open burning could lead to 5 years in prison'. The word 'discouraged' says everything about the urgency and priority of the government to solve this issue.

That's the best they can come up with... it will go away soon and life will return to normal.. until next year.

Storm in a tea cup, this only affects breathers.

How is "the safe standard of 37.5 µg/m³  consider safe ?  I turn on our air purifiers when it goes into double digits.  They keep it well below 10, if on 0-1-2 µg/m³, unless we're cooking something.

 

When in the real world, it much lower.  Even the highest is 1/3 of what Thailand considers safe:

It's a wonder how people survived at all in the last few decades when the air was just as bad, but nobody knew about it.  It's only the AQI sites and social media which now mean we all panic about "the air"!   Just wear a proper mask and get on with it! 😷

As long as the politicians profit from it, theyll be far gone living somewhere with clean air when the issue reaches a tipping point

I understood it was banned with legal consequences for offenders.

Warning people seems to be the only thing the Thai Government is capable of.  Actually, taking preventive measures at the sources of the problem is totally out of the question.  Still a third world country as far as I'm concerned.
