Kerryd Posted Saturday at 08:56 AM Posted Saturday at 08:56 AM I suspect it's the same story as the Uzbek and various African hookers. They come here for the money, their "handlers" hold on to their passports, when they stop "earning" or get too "independent" suddenly Immigration gets tipped off on exactly where to find them and then they are someone else's problem. And the handlers simply make a call or text and a couple days later "new talent" arrives at the airport and once they've cleared Immigration they hand their passport over to the "handler" - probably unaware of the rules or what's expected of them and maybe after a party or two to "test" the new talent they get put to work making money. That stuff has been going on since the first civilizations started springing up and people in the "oldest profession" found they could ply their trade and earn better money in other locations. 2

Ben Zioner Posted Saturday at 09:34 AM Posted Saturday at 09:34 AM Just wonder how many deaths a month occur in Thailand's IDC? But hush, hush this is a holiday paradise. I don't think I'd last a week, since people don't get their medication urinary retention would get me in just a few days. https://www.nhrc.or.th/en/ is a sad joke.

Old days 50 baht a day for over stays. In saying that in the 70s one budha stick could land you 12 months in those <deleted> hole prisons. Now legal dope stores every 20 meters. They’re not constantly changing. These overstay rules have been in force maybe 10 years now. With only 10 days overstay, had she made it to the airport with a flight out she would’ve been fined 5k and be on her way. Problem is she must’ve been caught in a random check. This means instant 5 year ban. Even so, if, as the article says “she has a good family blah blah”, then they just need to pay the fine and buy her a ticket and she’ll be on her way home in a few days. the main take from the article tho is that it’s a sympathy piece, and she’s some stunning princess barely surviving in squalid conditions. Yeah, well, don’t overstay, love 👍

impulse Posted Saturday at 10:08 AM Posted Saturday at 10:08 AM Maybe someone can set me straight... Years ago (2011?) when I first started working in LOS, some of my western co-workers claimed that there were charter flights from Russia once a week carrying "workers". They'd stay 4 weeks to keep to the 30 days on their visa, then fresh ones would cycle in with new visas on the weekly charter. Were they yanking my chain? The topic came up on a company van ride that took us past U-Tapao.

The difference is, in other countries prisoners and especially those on remand get treated like humans. Also, when someone breaks immigration rules they go through the legal process while on bail and have the right to appeal. When the court appeals finish and they get deported they are just taken to the airport and put on a flight. 10 days overstay OMG! I've made a mistake and had overstay my visa and just paid a few hundred baht. 1

I completely disagree, and I think the vast majority of the expat population here feels the same way. I do agree that the government dislikes us and I would argue that the government doesn't want us here, but I think the vast majority of the Thai people don't dislike us, or they're indifferent, but very few of them dislike us. It's a different story when you're in an area like Samui, Phuket or Pattaya, but that's not the general population of Thailand. Those are just folks that are very jaded, and have seen way too many foreigners, many of whom are misbehaving. 1 1
NativeBob Posted Saturday at 10:51 AM Posted Saturday at 10:51 AM Obviously something is missing. 10 days is not a biggie. Escort? Just check FB - there are tons of offers. To lazy to do this guessing game, but obviously there's something missing. PS: IDC is BKK is still at the Suan Plu, on the Sathorn Rd. Anybody can visit and bring food, cloths, cigarettes etc. I suggest to bring grilled chicken - meal at IDC are horrible sh*t.

If so you are an exceedingly cruel human being. 1
Simon1287 Posted Saturday at 10:58 AM Posted Saturday at 10:58 AM Turn up at an airport and pay the fine you are deemed to have “surrendered yourself to the authorities” and as long as the overstay isn’t silly you pay the fine and away you go home. (I am not up to speed on the exact lengths of times that cause problems these days as I am not stupid enough to overstay) On the other hand, get checked by the authorities anywhere else in Thailand on overstay and you had better be prepared for a world of crap. I cringe when I see people advising people to “not worry about a few days overstay just pay at the airport”. The many farangs I have met over the years who have been whisked off to the IDC in Bangkok for quite minor overstays would most likely cringe too. One was on just 48 hours overstay when he was in an accident in Pattaya in a taxi and the police checked his passport. IDC was his next hotel. Simon 1 1

Deterrents are good. But, they have to be reasonable and proportional. Putting her in with the general prison population is just nasty and heartless. They must have significantly less harsh detention centers that would have been far more appropriate. More well deserved egg on the face of Thai tourism. 1 1
