There was no advancement east.

After the collapse of the Soviet empire, every country in eastern Europe was delighted to gain autonomy and sovereignty. Determine its own future.

They all joined the EU and NATO voluntarily.

NATO is a defence force. Unlike Russia they have never invaded another country.

Putin is a murderous despot, at home and abroad. The world knows this but Trump and his goons ignore it because he likes macho nationalists, empire expanding immoralists such as Putin.
