Is this true? Thai Police & Court

I received a weird message from someone I haven't spoken to for 8 years.  Let's call him John.

John is about 21 years old (previous friend of my daughter when we used to live in Thailand).

John is half thai.

I'm summarising what he said:

John said he has been 'framed'.

Someone that John knows got paranoid and started a fight and pointed a gun at John.

John has the whole thing on camera.

The person with the gun left the scene and told the police that John had threatened him with a gun.

The police arrested John and he faces court.

John says that the police are not interested in his video which shows the other guy was the one with the gun.

The police (or court) released John on Bail for 300,000 THB.

A money lender paid this for John.

John is now asking if we can help him pay back the money lender.

I don't know the full story,  and it could be a scam (to extort money.

My questions:

(1)

Is 300,000 thb a correct amount for this sort of situation,  or impossible?

(2)

Is 3 months waiting time normal?

(3)

I would have thought that the police would have released John without charging him because of his video evidence showing that it was the 'other' guy who had the gun.

Is it normal that the police would ignore such evidence?

Obviously there is more to the story.. but I probably may never find out.

Possibly John has actually done something bad, and scared to admit this to me.

Also,  perhaps John is trying a  money scam on us.

Opinions?

Why help a former half friend with money? Block him from messaging you.

it happened in thailand, let the half thai side of his ancestry sort it out.

Just say sorry you haven't got the money, they usually understand that. Maybe a scam maybe not. If it's a moneylender the rate of interest will be high, so you pay 300k and you owe loads more most likely

Ignore it!

Option A it's fake.

Option B: John asked already everybody else he knew in the last 8 years and nobody wanted to help him - for good reasons. Now you are the next on the long list of people from years ago. John didn't think of you for 8 years. Why should you do something for him now?

Eight years, 300k and from someone you barely know. Why even post this nonsense.

Well "JOHN" needs to show his video to his lawyer...but if anyone has been here for much more than a shorttime, then they could realize that ANYTHING is possible, legal or not here.  Thailand strives to be the HUB of everything and definitely IMHO has become the hub of the scam.

Tell John to bugger off and if he asks again you will report him to the police for trying to scam 300k.

i would say this option is accurate. If he really has proof in video that the other guy had the gun then he would have been released. 300,000 is quite a lot of money and for what? A bribe? Why bribe when he has vdo proof of innocence. You are being scammed.

I just know my car insurance bail out is 300k 🤔

This is either a BS story, fairytale, or a scam..

What your daughter says about the issue? They were friends, right?.

300.000.-? Smell scam.. IMO

Ask John to let you see the video.

Also if he borrowed 300k from a money lender it would take more than that to pay it off.

Because it's not real.

These long winded 'essays' are popping up on AN all the time now, strangely they never existed before!

Why not ask a lawyer but AN instead?

If it sounds doubtful, if it sounds fake, it likely is. Also why would you help somebody that you barely know? It's one thing to come to the rescue of a relative or a very close friend that you love and trust, it's another thing to even consider helping somebody that you barely know or haven't talked to for years. In this world it's okay to be kind, but one has to be able to say no.

There is a whole subculture in this world, who absolutely refuse to work for a living, and instead like to prey on those who are vulnerable, naive, dumb, and easy victims. It is our responsibility to be careful, prudent, willing to do some vetting, some research, some due diligence, anytime we part with cash. Especially online. Dealing with Ebay, Lazada, Amazon is one thing. You have recourse. But, dealing with Facebook vendors, Instagram, Youtube, dating sites, or any other social media, the scammers outweigh the real deals. People get taken every day. I get junk emails offering me at least $100 million a month. And then there are acquaintances. Please.

These people are parasites, they barely deserve the oxygen they consume, and we must do everything in our power to deny the online worms.

I can answer this one, 14 months from being 'hit and run' victim

First court case deciding if case to answer +10 months

Second court case for judge to award compensation + another 4 months

Third court case for sentencing in May + another 3 months

In all 17 months from offence to sentencing.

Police use video from traffic light CCTV to catch offender and prove guilt.

This was a very informative reply.
Thank you 🙂
.. and, at the same time, i'm sorry about your 17 months of having to await court dates, trial and sentencing.

UPDATE:

thank you everyone for the advice.

I was already thinking it was possibly a scam.

in the end we suggested they persist in showing the video evidence to the police and this should be enough to get them off the hook.

if their plight is real, and they have video evidence then they shouldn't have to pay any bail.

and if its not true, then I have told them 'No'.
