Retirement visa extension and 18 months passport validity

Featured Replies

This is for a couple of years ahead, for retirement visa extension they need 18 months validity...!

So need to get a new passport (UK) if it, for example, has 17 months validity on it... ? Do they even issue one so early (if say I'm in London and apply from there )...?

I think I read somewhere a while ago that before if renew UK passport they give 10 years from last expiration date, but now if apply early they start 10 years from application date, so lose a lot of validity in this way too...!

I'm not sure I understand the 18 months thing.

You don't need any specific amount of time on your passport to apply for a retirement extension.  If your passport isn't valid for 1-year from the end of your previous extension, you will still receive your new extension but it will only be through the end of your passport validity.

That stopped years ago. It will be valid 10 years from date of issue. And there is no limit to how early you can apply., not that you actually have any reason to do so.

Extensions from a Non O retirement are 12 month extensions.

You do not require any specific period of validity on your pp.

Certainly not 18 months.

Your extension will be 12 months or up till date of expiry of pp if that is less than 12 months.

The passport issue date is from when you apply and expiry will be 10 years from that date. Not from expiry of current pp.

So yes you "lose days"

Note: in this forum time and time again folk get into not ideal situation by trying to milk out as much time as possible from a pp.

Renew when schedule suits you and don't be concerned losing year or 2.

I agree with most of what has been posted earlier.

My retirement visa expires in June this year, and I shall extend it again at that time (until June 2026).

My passport expires in early 2027, and I shall start the new passport process (again) in December this year or January 2026 (it usually takes about a month or so).

Once the new passport arrives (hopefully by February 2026), I shall take my current passport and my previous passport (which has the original retirement visa) to immigration to transfer the retirement extension visa to the new passport.

All painless, hopefully.

Good plan.

Just for others....the pp with original issue of Non O visa is not required.

Your cancelled passport and new pp is sufficient.

Note that some immigration offices are now also requiring bank book + photocopies+ bank book update on day of transfer.

CW one example (checking financial compliance)

Note transfer is not urgent. Can do when you have business with immigration.

What would happen if you previously used an agent to supply the funds for the extention, and that amounrt was no longer in your bank book to provide up date ?

Then you use your agent to get your stamps transferred.

I have seen this 18 months requirement mentioned a lot on websites, but it may be for getting new visa, not extension...!?

I will be going to extend next week in Phuket, so I will ask them there to be sure...

It is mentioned on websites.

It's tied up fact that many countries have 6 month validity requirement hence the 18 months is stated.

Correct answer has been posted.

If your pp is expiring in less than 12 months on day you apply for extension then the extension will be issued with expiry same as pp expiry.

If I was using an agent I wouldn't

bother with transfer until my next extension was due and have agent sort it.

If some reason you needed the transfer done to eg obtain COR etc then chat with agent.

for a new passport they used to give 6 months or so extra to the 10 years, but now 10 years from date of issue

extensions Thailand are issued for 1 year or until the expiry of passport it that is sooner
