Skyscraper comes down in Bangkok earthquake

This is safe?

Wouldn't pay 5 baht to own a condo in Bangkok now.

again just water splashed over the top. Maybe the structure of the building is ruined but I think it's too early to know. Obviously they need to do extensive audits of the damage and see what's actually happened.

Looks more like questionable building standards, rather than the power of the earthquake

Well no, the earthquake was a factor , but the building should have been built to withstand the earthquake .    Was the concrete below given  enough time to cure before the upper part of the buil

Somehow you missed skywalk being completely detached and building swaying like it's about to collapse?

I'm sure the structural damage will be minimal....officially.

I think this video better represents the shoddy Thai condo construction. It's from "threads" so not sure if the link will show properly

Besides that one building under construction which went down all the rest look like they held up pretty good no? I see the videos of the water from pools splashing over the top but that's to be expected.

Not sure if it’s the same condo but this one took some heavy damage due to the skybridges  (sorry….can’t embed Facebook videos)

Just thought that it was rather inappropriate for offer R.I.P's to people who haven't been declared deceased yet .

Not at all; the building disintegrated into a large pile of rubble. No one survived that, and a lot of anonymous people have lost their lives. RIP to all who passed today.

Don't know if anyone saw or posted this yet.  Was in the 'Thai Enquirer', but since been deleted (reported elsewhere)

Notice another thread on AN stated 43 missing at site.

And yes, ITD is the same company working on Rama 2 highway, and president of, is Premchai Kannasut, who did time for killing that panther at the national park.

... "Reports of an under-construction building collapse in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district following earthquakes in Myanmar are trending in China after initial reports suggested that the new State Audit Office project was overseen by a joint venture between Italian-Thai Development and China Railway No. 10 (Thailand).

So far, three workers have been confirmed dead, while more than 80 remain missing and are feared trapped in the rubble. Rescue operations are ongoing.

The State Audit Office signed a construction contract on November 23, 2020, with the ITD-CRCC joint venture for the 33-story main building and related facilities, valued at 2.14 billion baht.

Another contract, signed on January 14, 2021, awarded 74.65 million baht to the PKW joint venture (PN Synchronize, W. and Associates Group, and KP Consultants & Management) for project supervision. The construction timeline has been extended from fiscal years 2020 to 2026.

A widely shared report in China stated that the collapsed building was designed with a core tube and flat slab system. The core was constructed using slipform casting, while the flat slabs were installed using a lifting method. The external structure used a climbing formwork system to ensure concrete quality for the high-rise.

Online discussions include comments such as:

“As seen in the second image, this building uses a ‘flat slab’ system, meaning it has no beams and relies only on columns for support. This reduces its earthquake resistance compared to traditional frame structures, making the design a major factor in any collapse.”

“The bridge that collapsed in Myanmar was also built by China.”

Others shared images of the building with a Chinese caption reading, “Made in China.”

[Update] The Department of Business Development's data indicates that the joint venture operates in a business category not listed under the Foreign Business Act, meaning foreign nationals can run the business without a license. However, it is required to submit financial statements under the Accounting Act.

Financial data for 2023 shows total assets of 1.36 billion baht and total liabilities of 3.11 billion baht.

In 2023, the joint venture’s primary revenue was 87.28 million baht, with total revenue of 105.45 million baht. It reported a gross profit of 17.52 million baht, while selling and administrative expenses totaled 35.04 million baht. Total expenses amounted to 1.86 billion baht, resulting in a net loss of 1.75 billion baht. No corporate income tax was reported."

Just found this video on FB, looks like someone knew it would come down, as he focused on the building quite a while before it imploded.

The earthquake obviously had happened and the crane on top of the building was behaving erratically.

Just listen to what the guy with the phone camera says: he is alarmed by the woman to the fact that the building is swaying, you can see the hook of the crane move.

After the building swayed for a few moments, commented as such by the guy with the camera, you can hear the inner column structure break before the building collapses.

Now imagine the potential structural damage you do not see and for which you need to dig up the fpoundations and check the internal static elements, if walls got bent that much, that covering elements were popped off.

I guess a lot of people owning expensive condos will be left with literally zilch. 😱😢

There are visible damage to structural columns at some buildings.

Anyhow, strongest earthquake, I ever experienced. Strangely, the two earthquakes in my life I felt, both happened in SE Asia. (Even though, I've been to NZ and Japan...)

I've been in one very strong earthquake in NZ in the 80s. I was at work having tea break and the earth moved for several minutes. I thought at the time that if it was a fun park I'd pay to go on a ride like that. Luckily, no damage occurred ( except to a high concrete chimney which was replaced by a steel one ) and no injuries resulted.

I'm not claiming to be a structural engineer, but shouldn't there be stronger rebar in that column? One can see that the column has reduced in height ( the rebar has bowed out ), which puts the floor above in danger.

Looks more like the facade wasn't stuck on very well.

There are of course other load bearing columns, but also a lot of weight to hold up.

Seems the owners spent more on the fancy facade than quality structure.

I suspect a lot of high rise occupants are now wondering if they made the right decision.

What is this? Fancy design or the facade that has bulged?

But bash first, and no doubt not apologise later.

I was referring to the bridges and overpasses.

It was so poorly built it literally imploded and came down on itself. Pure panic right now throughout Bangkok. Getting close to grid lock as parents rush to pick up children from schools, get home, and for some just flee.

sure uh huh.

Pretty much every single building has some minor damage. Mostly cracked mortar and tiles peeling off or staying in place, but cracking.

It will be busy days at Thai Watsadu or Boonthavorn.

They might want to point the camera at this building in Chiang Mai.
