Popular Post novacova Posted Friday at 12:44 PM Popular Post Posted Friday at 12:44 PM 4 hours ago, CharlieH said: A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar today, sending shockwaves as far as Bangkok and causing widespread devastation. The epicenter was near Mandalay at a depth of 10 kilometers. The impact was strongly felt, prompting chaos and evacuations across the Thai capital. In Bangkok, a building near Chatuchak Park collapsed, trapping more than 40 people inside. According to police and emergency services, 43 workers remain buried under the debris, while seven have managed to escape. Rescue operations are in full swing, with help from the National Emergency Response and Rescue Centre, as teams work tirelessly to reach survivors. The Thai government has responded swiftly, convening an emergency meeting to address the crisis. Buildings in Bangkok, not typically designed for such quakes, suffered damage, highlighting the severity of the situation. The US Geological Survey and BBC reports confirm that strong tremors were felt even in southern China, making this a significant regional event. 28-03-2025 Terrible 3
Popular Post ronnie50 Posted Friday at 12:51 PM Popular Post Posted Friday at 12:51 PM Thailand needs to quickly call in the international expert search and rescue teams who routinely fly into really bad earthquake zones like we've seen in Turkiye and Iran and elsewhere. Within a few hours they can be on scene and finding their ways through the rubble with dogs and other equipment. I know the govt has lost face/confidence given the collpase in the first place, but to rely on inexperienced search teams in a case like this will result in needless deaths. 1 4
ikke1959 Posted Friday at 12:57 PM Posted Friday at 12:57 PM If an earthquake of 1000km away can bring this kind of damage, you can question the quality of the building constructions.. Suppose it happened in Chiang Mai or Kanchanaburi.. How much damage could have been done. I hope that people will get safe rescued under the debris with the most urgency, even they are Myanmar.. Nature has powers that nobody can control, just a proof of it 1 1

Yup... its been in the Thai social media already... Families unable to travel getting absolutely creamed by Taxi drivers... 500-1000 baht for a 50-100 baht fare etc... Hopefully this gets the media attention it deserves and triggers the Police to deal with the scam taxi drivers refusing to use meters etc once and for all... I won't be holding my breath... 1 10

Nature has powers that nobody can control, just a proof of it It was 580km away and an estimated 4.5Mw Magnitude by the time the energy reached Bangkok (within approximately 1.5 minutes after the quake in Myanmar) There can't be a quake in Chiang Mai or Kanchanaburi because its not on a plate boundary. This earthquake, in Myanmar was from the Sagaing Fault, which is a strike-slip (transform) fault where the Indian Plate and the Sunda Plate (or Burma Microplate) slide past each other horizontally. 2 3 2

Has anyone heard? Hi , I’m in France at the moment glued to the BBC and their reporters. Not much news from Thailand / Bangkok, mostly tourists and their filming being shown , some live. The collapsed building , and thousands of people running like hell out of shopping malls / condos, and waiting in the parks. I don’t believe they have received any instructions from the government so far. Lots of falling concrete etc and the spectacular overflowing top floor pool that looked like the hotel opposite the Erawan shrine . Obviously worries about the sky train and metro. As for poor Myanmar , they’ve asked for international help, rare, but not much news / phots, except collapsed bridges. Well know more tomorrow . Im very surprised that ASEAN Now hasn’t followed this up better?? 2 2

I've seen photos of Thai rescue teams - they have their search dogs etc. If I'm not mistaken, Thailand sends its experts overseas as part of an international effort when similar issues happen (i.e. Turkiye and Iran), so I don't believe there is a reason to suspect inexperience. That said, calling in any help is not a bad thing. 1 2

Popular Post John Drake Posted Friday at 01:20 PM Popular Post Posted Friday at 01:20 PM Saw lots of hospital evacuations on Twitter/X with patients rolled out into the 38 degree streets. My house only got hit by rolling waves of tremors for maybe 45 seconds to a minute. Maybe it was more. Don't know. But no damage and no damage in my village. This is out on Phutthamonthon Sai 3. So it looks like the really bad stuff was among the big towers and condos. Keep thinking that someone could have been washed over the side of the building in one of those condo/hotel pools I saw that were turned into waterfalls. 3 1

What is it with you Americans? It's as if the entire country is locked in some festering Freudian nightmare, unable to shut up about a bloated, orange spectre who haunts your every thought. Well it happens that I observed the the cloud of smoke from the collapsing building from the Ari BTS station, and I felt a lot less threatened by this tremor than by the present terrifying developments of US politics. Anyhow, damage here in Bangkok is minimal some people show cracks in partition walls, which is normal as buildings were clearly undulating, structural devices will have to be checked though. And everyone must have noted that the only building that has collapsed was to become the Kingdom's audit office; Thailand's telluric forces of resistance to change. 1 2 1
