Well, the Thais are just getting a taste of their own medicine as they slap massive tariffs on foreign imports (karma really), and then there is also the VAT, which the US doesn't do the same way, rather leaving retail tax up to the individual states to decide, and some states have none at all. 

You can't have it both ways if you place or dish out crazy tariffs of your own, only to blub about reciprocal tariffs at half the amount you put on US stuff... that's delusional.

Yes, it will be painful but that's because it has gone on so long that markets and economies have gotten so used to it. I'm not saying tariffs are a good thing, but the entitlement of many countries is stunning... even the EU is having a hissy-fit over 20% when Brussels screws 39% plus VAT on US goods to Europe.

The UK got off lightly, and it knows it, but even the EU (20%) and Thailand (36%) have done okay too considering they charge the US double on its exports... much entitled blubbing can be heard. The answer is FTAs... but that makes some countries even more uncomfortable because they can't compete properly and need a rigged market to get their home monopolies etc.

Thailand has been cheating consumers both local and tourists for decades with absurdly high import duty tarifs and over charging in all the malls and shopping outlets. This is the backlash of years of greed. Time now to get back to senses, drop the import duty rates such as to get a deal with the USA. If not, retail business is doomed in Thailand.

Supposedly, if the price of the wine is less than 1000 baht, there is no tariff.  That's why we see so many wines that cost 999 baht.  Still, there most by some other explanation for the crazy markups.  Other taxes?  

European Union nations have been enforcing absurd VAT rates at 20 to 21% for years, added to import duty rates and thus creating inflation for it's own. Trump in plainly retaliating to what Europe and Asian countries have been doing. Why should the USA charge a minimal import duty on imported stuff, when all the other countries are overcharging with excessively high import duty and VAt rates ? Thailand is no exception.

 

If anybody is to blame, it's the corrupt policies within the European Union and many other countries in the world. Trump is plainly functionning on a tit-for-tat basis. I don't agree with everything he does or says but he is doing the right thing to protect his own and now destroy his country like Europe is doing.

You do not understand what a Value Added Tax is do you?

Countries with a VAT methodology are more likely to have a fair consumptipn tax system.

The USA doesn't have a VAT tax, but most of the world does and it results in societal benefits. In effect the USA is  angry that the world moved to a more equitable tax system.

 

My memory is very bad on this subject, so can anyone remember what happened with beer Lao and how Thailand managed to get around the ASEAN free trade area? They found a way round it to keep the price high. I wouldn't be surprised to see some clever tax labeling to 'reduce' the taxes on American products.

Thailand should put a tariff on US tourists.

Do you mean to say that a VAT is a progressive tax that is more on the rich and less on the poor?

Thailand charges on average 8% on US imports. America charges on average 2% on Thai imports. The 37% rate is to reflect the huge $45 billion dollar trade deficit. This means the only way for Thailand to reduce the deficit and thus the tariff is  to buy more American imports or otherwise make investments into the American economy. This is why it is a crisis. Thailand can't simply lower its tariff rate. Trump is saying I will not keep buying from you unless you buy a lot more from me.

These corrupt b******s have been lining their pockets with taxes on American goods for years, now they cry when their rice and coconut milk is whacked with similar fees. They deserve ruin.

With you on this one I like a glass of red myself and some of my favourites are from EU countries how 1-2k baht can be justified on a bottle that would cost me 6-7 pounds in the UK haven't got a clue.

For LNG, the import tariff rate would be reduced from 5% to 2%, while the tariff on imported cars would be slashed from 64% to 32%. Ethanol tariffs would be reduced from 10% to 5%.

China will flood European and Asian markets in particular with cheaper stuff to compensate losses in US Business.

Even cars might be sold with a hefty discount.

But what the Thais will do is totally the opposite they will raise tariffs on the USA  imports not reduce. 

Thailand charges overall 72% tariff on imports from USA.  In 2024, the US goods trade deficit with Thailand was $45.6 billion, a 11.7% increase from 2023, with U.S. goods imports from Thailand totaling $63.3 billion.  Thailand had a $35.4 billion trade surplus with the United States in 2023.  Reciprocal Tariff is only 36% from the USA. 

They're already are several war rooms I don't know why they need to form one they're already is a few built around the city.

I been i the wine business over 40 years, the lower end wines are like 4x the price here but once you start spending like 3000 baht a bottle the prices are almost the same as USA, I think only because importer are declaring the values low and paying taxes based on a $10 bottle not a $100 bottle
