An incredible amount of heartless expats on this thread. You would probably not change your opinion if the woman were a relative of yours. As far as I am concerned, you have no business using up valuable oxygen.

But nobody cares what your opinion is.

If you break the laws of any country and get caught, then you should accept the punishment given by that country.

I can understand 1 or 2 days overstay, but 207 days is NOT a silly mistake.

AFAIR when you enter the country your passport is stamped with the number of days, you are allowed to stay. There are ways to extend the time, IF you wish to stay longer.

If she were a relative of mine and staying with me I would have explained the rules to her. If she wanted to stay longer but couldn't be bothered to do anything about it, I would have turned her in earlier than the 207 days.

I have friends from the EU and the UK who come out every year and they go back earlier or on time.

So WHY should she be an exception?

I have NO sympathy for her as it is her own fault. Nobody forced her to overstay.

Don't overstay you wont have anything to worry about. Easy really.

Oh, I'm not worried, my visas are sorted until the 2040s with my Thailand Elite membership but I really don't like what I see going on, especially in Phuket.

I heard elsewhere that it's now routine IN PHUKET for immigration to allow people to pass through into the departure area known as 'airside' where a whole different set of laws apply which is when they 'move in' for the arrest.

Why would she need money for a flight, the op literally says " at the airport’s international terminal. The woman was preparing to depart the country "?

Yes, see my post above about airside arrests. Something quite insidious is going on here. Not entirely sure why yet but we will find out one day. It's not new, been happening for at least a few years now.
