Givi Monokey boxes won't fit

Last year I bought a Givi Monokey rack and plate for my bike. Also bought a box. All imported from Motostorm, Italy. All fit perfectly.

 

Recently I bought another Monokey box from Shopee/Lazada. It didnt fit. The Kawasaki mechanic couldn't make it fit either. It all looked like a genuine Givi Monokey box but as I measured the latch of the box was positioned 3 mm too deep to be able to reach the hole in the protrusion on the plate. I sent back and got money back.

 

Now I ordered another box from Shopee/Lazada (i forgot which, the hotel does it for me). It has exactly the same problem. I can't press it onto my Monokey plate. This is another model of box and, I believe, another seller. All arrives in what appears to be original packing.

 

Inbetween I have often used my old Monokey box that I imported from Italy without problems. It has always slipped in place easily and holds on well.

 

So it seems the Givi boxes I get from Shopee/Lazada don't fit.

 

Next week I get another box and Monokey plate from Motostorm, Italy. They say no changes have been made and the box should fit my old plate and my old box will also fit the new plate. ... They say.

 

I will try to update this thread when that stuff arrive.

It's highly likely the stuff from Shopee/Lazada is counterfeit,

perhaps if you bought a Shopee/Lazada box and plate combo they would work together ?

I lived in China many years so I am used to evaluating "degree of fake". But all looks real good here. Except the lock doesn't fit. Idiot copier lose money and draw attention. But I dont think Givi cares.

I think you are right. But I want to switch boxes between my bikes so I will import from now on.

 

The large Maxia 4 was 30.000 Baht in Shopee/Lazada but only about 13.000 to import + tariff + VAT about 2000 from Italy. (And transportation) Glad I imported. I started a thread about it.

 

But now I found a small box @ B 2500. Have to send that one back too.

Yepp. You are probably right.

I believe this could be some "region coding". I bought a very good Samsung cell in Buriram some years ago. It worked in Asia, Africa but never in Europe. The worst hacking tricks including flashing new ROM didn't help. It was a cheap but good model only intended for some countries in Asia and Africa. 

 

This problem with the Givi boxes could be the same. Chinese plates and boxes have their own standard. Therefore cheap Chinese boxes can not leak to Europe or US. (Not cheap when they reach Lazada, though.)

 

It must be intentional. A counterfeiter couldn't make a perfect box but fail with the lock. The Asian standard is a region code.

I don't go into what is decent.

 

But I believe the error in manufacturing could be intentional so Givi could sell their products at a lower price in some countries and the error stops them from reaching countries where Givi.can charge a higher price.

 

There may also be shops around here where the "foreign standard" is sold. They will not fit plates bought here. The official Givi retailer for Thailand advertises on Lazada, as I remember. 

 

It's all a mess.

Kawasaki sells both top boxes and baseplates.
