White House Considers Slashing China Tariffs to De-Escalate Trade War

You don't seem to understand how negotiations work. Thankfully Donald Trump does. Of course he doesn't want 145% tariffs forever, he used that to motivate China to negotiate so the US can get a better deal from China. How is this hard to understand for some people?

I love a static unchanging world where I can buy the same Tonkatsu every week forever as much as the next guy, but in the real world you have to be dynamic and twist a few arms, things change.

Maybe you're just not a go-getter like Trump and like to eat vanilla ice cream every evening in exactly the same cup?

MAGA's and their blind faith. Of course he does have huge power because of that MAGA blind faith last November  but what about the damage done and the painful uncertainty along the way - let alone where it's headed - I'll let you believe that it's all part of a plan and not reactionary - such as the tariffs on so many countries - often poor ones - that were put on high and reduced to 10 per cent for no logical reason, no bargaining advantage, just makes him lose credibility and look silly. One example. But believers will believe.

Trump’s statement that China tariffs will “come down substantially” but not to zero suggests a potential de-escalation, while Bessent’s comment on THE SAME DAY about a two- to three-year timeline for a deal indicates prolonged uncertainty.

These messages conflict: one implies near-term relief, the other a long slog. Markets hate uncertainty, and this inconsistency—paired with Bessent’s clarification that tariffs won’t be cut unilaterally—sparked volatility, with the S&P 500 dropping 100 points from its daily high after his remarks. It’s not a clear sell signal, but it’s a red flag for risk-off sentiment until clearer policy emerges.

This along with Walmart and Target warning of empty shelves next month is not a good look.

Who cares about the markets.

So all you lot who predicted that China would not negotiate......looooooosers....

And Trump wins again.

So much winning.

He hasn't picked up the phone once while trump is so eager to talk. How are the prices of goods going in the USA and the 10 thousands of layoffs.

You gotta love the reporting on MSN - "No John, the Chinese appear not to be talking to the US" "I see, Sally, they have also just demanded that the  US put in place a team to negotiate".

So if China is not talking to the US, how did they ask the US to put together a trade negotiation team? Smoke signals?

Of course they are talking.

Again, the blinkered misunderstand of trade deficits. You persist in believing that the buyer holds the advantage over the seller. Yes, the US has something China wants. But China has lots of things the US wants. In fact, badly needs.

I shall explain to you how this works, because I like you. See, in a relationship of course both parties want something. But one party wants something far more than the other.. In a relationship, the party that cares less about losing the relationship has the upper hand. Does the US have a 400 billion USD share of China's market?  No. So in the Chinese American relationship the US will ALWAYS have the upper hand..

You lot are the most shameless distorters of facts I have ever seen. You lot all claimed China would not negotiate, you want me to drag out the posts and repost them?

Just shameless.

Yes, bring 'em out.

Start a new thread so it doesn't get lost amongst the replies.

Your claiming that China wants the money more than the US wants the products? How badly do you think manufacturers want the inputs that come from China? Not to mention the stuff that China can withhold.

US President Donald Trump is planning to spare carmakers from some of his most onerous tariffs, in another trade war climbdown following intense lobbying by industry executives over recent weeks.

The move would exempt car parts from the tariffs that Trump is imposing on imports from China to counter its role in fentanyl chemical exports, as well from those levied on steel and aluminium — a “destacking” of the duties, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

"Destacking?"

Sounds like what happens when you go all in with a pair of douches.

Xi told in the media, that he wouldn't talk to Trump until all the threats where off the table and the first need to come up with a plan presented to lower-level people.

Of course they do. Musk's robots are just a hobby horse. 400 billion USD is 400 billion USD.

If you think China and the US aren't talking now, how did China just ask the US to put together a trade delegation with authority to negotiate the trade deal?

How did they ask this of the US if China and the US aren't talking, pray tell?

Talking  Negotiating

Conflation is the merging of two or more sets of information, texts, ideas, or opinions into one, often in error.  Conflation is defined as 'fusing blending', but is often used colloquially as 'being equal to' - treating two similar but disparate concepts as the same.  (wiki)

Robotics are 1 of the 2 things that Musk is pinning the future of Tesla on. Maybe you should let him know he's mistaken.

400 billion to, say, Germany isn't the same as $400 billion to China. It's less than 3% of GDP. China isn't denying that it will hurt but given the huge size of its economy and its formidable engines of propaganda and repression, it's nowhere close to dangerous. You might want to learn about that from this Wall St. Journal article.

While Trump has repeatedly sought to get Xi on the phone, China wants the two sides to work out the contours of an agreement before the leaders speak.

US to China:  Pick up the phone, pretty please.

China to US:  We're busy, call later.

US to China:  C'mon, let's make a deal.

China to US:  Did you hear something?

US to China:  We'll cut the tariffs in half, so please call.

China to US:  Oh, look at the time!  Pilates starts in twenty.

Look!  They're tal.....uh.........negotiating!!!

Is Trump panicking much?

He isn't panicking, he's folding. Just like he always does. Cause chaos, create damage, and leave the country in a weaker position than when he started. That's the Trump way.
